Description
Queen, also known as Queen the Plague, is a major antagonist in the Wano Country story arc of One Piece. Born under the name Scien, he became one of the three All-Stars of the Beasts Pirates, the elite commanders known collectively as the Disasters who serve directly under the pirate emperor Kaido. Before joining Kaido's crew, Queen worked as a scientist in MADS, a rogue research organization that operated outside the approval of the World Government, where he crossed paths with other notable scientists such as Vinsmoke Judge. This background explains both his advanced scientific knowledge and his familiarity with the technology of Germa 66. Within the Beasts Pirates, Queen held the position of de facto ruler of the Udon region of Wano Country, where he supervised the prison mines and labor camps that supplied Kaido's forces.
Queen is a physically imposing figure, standing over six meters tall and possessing a massive, round build, although he insists that his size is muscle rather than fat. His appearance is striking and theatrical: he wears sunglasses with blue lenses strapped to his head, sports a long blond braid and a drooping Fu Manchu mustache, paints his lips with navy lipstick, and is rarely seen without a cigar. His left arm is a cybernetic prosthetic of his own design, and a long scar runs across his chest. His appearance has changed dramatically over his life, as he was a chubby child with a buzzcut and goggles, a thin young man with a styled mohawk during his time in MADS, and finally a heavyset cyborg in the present day.
In terms of personality, Queen is loud, bombastic, and theatrical, treating his own life as a performance. He enjoys dancing and singing and uses his signature funky song and dance routines to rally his subordinates. He is extremely proud and arrogant, both as an All-Star and as a scientist, and he reacts poorly to criticism from others, including his fellow All-Star King. His entertainer's instincts have a dark side, as he delights in hosting blood sports, death matches, and execution games, and he is willing to change the rules of his contests to make them unwinnable. He shows little regard for the lives of the lower-ranking members of his own crew and takes twisted pleasure in using his viruses against people, including his own subordinates. His confidence can collapse quickly in moments of genuine danger, and he has shown a cowardly streak, such as when he feigned death after being effortlessly defeated by Big Mom. He also has a fondness for beautiful women and was deeply infatuated with the Wano courtesan Komurasaki, breaking down in tears when he heard of her death.
Queen's motivations center on serving his boss Kaido, maintaining his status within the Beasts Pirates, and proving the superiority of his scientific work. He takes great pride in his weapons, viruses, and cybernetic modifications, which he claims surpass even the work of the brilliant scientist Vegapunk. During his battle against Sanji, he was eager to force Sanji to use his Germa 66 Raid Suit so that he could test his own technology against it. His sadistic enjoyment of spectacle and violence also drives much of his behavior.
In the story, Queen serves as one of the principal antagonists of the Wano Country Arc. As ruler of Udon, he oversees the brutal conditions of the prison mines and enforces Kaido's iron grip on the country. During the raid on Onigashima, the Beasts Pirates stronghold, Queen plays a central role in the fighting. He unleashes his engineered diseases upon the battlefield, most notably the Ice Oni virus, which turns its victims into mindless, aggressive carriers who attack anyone nearby. He also fires plague-loaded bullets into the crowd with a gatling gun and deploys a small army of modified subordinates. He fights directly against several major characters, including Marco, Chopper, and Sanji, before he is ultimately defeated during the raid. After the fall of Kaido, Queen is later seen having been drained of much of his body's fluids by the Marine Admiral Ryokugyu, leaving him greatly weakened and thinner.
Queen's relationships shape much of his behavior. He is a trusted confidant of Kaido, whom he addresses as boss, and he commands one of the three branches of the Beasts Pirates alongside King and Jack. His relationship with King is marked by constant bickering and mutual insults; King dismisses Queen as deadweight while Queen calls King a torture-loving pervert, yet the two coordinate effectively in battle. Jack is junior to both of them, and Queen joins King in scolding and looking down on him. Queen is also close to Scratchmen Apoo, the Beasts Pirates' intelligence officer, because of their shared love of music, and he calls Apoo brother, though he regards the friendship as a superficial one and is willing to use Apoo as a pawn. His ties to Vinsmoke Judge date back to their shared time in MADS, and Queen considers himself the superior scientist. His cruelty toward Chopper stems from Chopper's attempts to heal plague victims, which Queen resented because it interfered with his amusement.
Queen's abilities make him one of the strongest fighters in Kaido's crew. He ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model Brachiosaurus, an Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a massive brachiosaurus and into a hybrid form. In his full dinosaur form he can crush opponents under his weight, bite down on enemies, and use techniques such as the Brachiosaurus Bomb, a diving headbutt, and the Brachiosaurus Snake, in which his extended head and tail coil around an enemy. Beyond his Devil Fruit, Queen has extensively modified his own body with cybernetics, hiding weapons throughout his mechanical limbs. He can fire lasers called Black Light from his hand, mouth, or prosthetic claws, ignite his mechanical arm for the Wedding Banquet Heat Fist, launch missiles, and perform a variety of other mechanical attacks. As a master of bio-weaponry, he developed several engineered viruses, including the Mummy virus that desiccates its victims and his masterpiece, the Ice Oni virus, which kills within an hour without an antidote. He has also recreated several techniques of the Germa 66 science military, including Spark Queen, Electric Queen, Coil Queen, and an invisibility technique modeled on Stealth Black. Queen can use both Armament Haki and Observation Haki, and he carries a bounty of 1.32 billion berries.
Over the course of the story, Queen's circumstances change considerably even though his personality remains consistent. He begins as an arrogant overseer confident in his power, suffers humiliation when Big Mom defeats him, engages in increasingly desperate fighting during the Onigashima raid, and ends the arc stripped of his authority and drained by an Admiral. His past as a child and as a MADS researcher adds depth to his scientific genius, and his combination of scientific brilliance, vanity, sadism, and theatricality defines his role as one of the leading antagonists of the Wano Country conflict.
