TV-Series
Description
Jack, known by the epithet Jack the Drought, is a major antagonist in the One Piece series. He serves as one of the All-Stars, also known as the Calamities, of the Beasts Pirates, making him one of the three highest-ranking subordinates directly under the Emperor Kaido.
In terms of background, Jack is a giant grouper fish-man, a fact that grants him natural physical prowess and the ability to breathe underwater, even though he has eaten a Devil Fruit. He was born twenty-eight years before the main storyline and became a member of the Beasts Pirates at a young age, eventually rising through the ranks to become one of Kaido’s most trusted commanders. He was present in Wano Country twenty years prior during the burning of Oden Castle.
Jack’s personality is defined by extreme violence, short-temperedness, and a sadistic love for destruction. He is incredibly stubborn and unreasonable, refusing to listen to logic or engage in civil conversation to resolve conflicts. His cruelty is profound; he has no qualms about torturing prisoners by cutting off their limbs, attacking innocent civilians including children and the elderly, and using any means necessary to achieve his goals. When his patience wears thin during battle, he readily employs weapons of mass destruction, such as Caesar Clown’s poisonous gas Koro, rather than risk a prolonged fight. Despite his barbaric nature towards enemies and subordinates, Jack is subservient and respectful towards those he acknowledges as stronger than himself, such as his captain Kaido and his fellow All-Stars King and Queen, quietly accepting their insults and orders.
Jack’s primary motivation is to serve Kaido and the interests of the Beasts Pirates. He is driven to complete his missions, regardless of the risk or the means required. This is best demonstrated when he attacked a convoy of Marine battleships carrying Admiral Fujitora, former Fleet Admiral Sengoku, and Vice Admiral Tsuru in a reckless attempt to rescue Donquixote Doflamingo, a key business partner of Kaido. He also shows a personal enjoyment of destruction, admitting that he loves causing chaos even when there is no strategic benefit.
Within the story, Jack is the main antagonist of the Zou Arc and a supporting antagonist in the Wano Country Arc. He first appears when he and his crew attack the island of Zou, which is the back of an ancient giant elephant called Zunesha. For five days and nights, he relentlessly battles the Mink Tribe, fighting their day-time ruler Inuarashi and their night-time ruler Nekomamushi in turn without rest. After he fails to extract information about the ninja Raizo, he uses the poison gas to decimate the Minks, torturing the surviving leaders and cutting off Inuarashi’s left leg and Nekomamushi’s right arm. Following this, he is sent to retrieve Doflamingo. After being presumed dead by the World Government, it is revealed he survived the attack on the Marine convoy and returns to Zou to finish the job, only to be nearly destroyed when Zunesha, acting on the orders of Momonosuke, swings its trunk and sinks his entire fleet. Jack survives this as well due to his fish-man physiology and later plays a role in the Wano Country arc, where he participates in the attack on Onigashima, continuing to battle the Mink leaders and their warriors in their Sulong forms.
Key relationships define his position in the world. He is utterly loyal to and fearful of his captain, Kaido, whom he believes to be completely insane. While he is a fellow All-Star, he is portrayed as inferior to King and Queen, who openly insult and belittle him, treating him as a subordinate rather than an equal. He holds a deeply hostile relationship with the Mink leaders Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, having personally maimed them.
Jack’s development over the series shows his role as a relentless force of nature. However, he is not a static character. Despite his brutality, he is shown to be capable of genuine fear and panic when faced with an overwhelming power he cannot comprehend or fight, such as when he realized Zunesha was about to attack his fleet or when Kaido goes on drunken rampages. His humiliation at the hands of King and Queen and his nervousness around Big Mom reveal a more complex, anxious side to his personality beneath the violent exterior.
Notable abilities make Jack a formidable threat. His bounty is an incredibly high 1,000,000,000, reflecting the extreme danger he poses to the World Government. He possesses the power of the Zou Zou no Mi, Model: Mammoth, an ancient zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a mammoth or a mammoth hybrid. In this form, his size and destructive power increase dramatically, enabling him to level entire buildings with a single swing of his trunk. Jack is also a skilled swordsman, wielding two large curved blades disguised as tusks that he stores on his back. He is proficient in using both Kenbunshoku (Observation) Haki and Busoshoku (Armament) Haki, which are essential for surviving battles in the New World. Furthermore, his fish-man lineage grants him immense natural strength and the ability to survive underwater where most Devil Fruit users would drown, a factor that has repeatedly saved his life.
