Description
Kikunojo is a samurai from the region of Ringo in Wano Country and a loyal retainer of the Kozuki family, serving as one of the Nine Red Scabbards. Known by the epithet Kikunojo of the Lingering Snow, she is also the younger sibling of Izo. While working undercover, she adopted the alias Okiku. Biologically male, Kikunojo identifies as a woman at heart, presenting herself in a traditionally feminine manner.
The character was born as the child of the head of the Hanayagi school of dance. After her father was declared a criminal and the family fell into ruin, she and her brother Izo became orphans struggling to survive on the streets. Their circumstances changed when Kozuki Oden found them starving in Ringo and took them in, after which both brothers became his retainers and dedicated themselves to training as samurai.
Following the death of their lord Kozuki Oden, Kikunojo was sent twenty years into the future by the powers of Kozuki Toki. Unlike some of her comrades who left the country, she remained in Wano alone, working as a poster girl at a tea house in the town of Okobore Town. This position served as a cover while she gathered intelligence on the forces of the Kurozumi family and the Beasts Pirates, quietly waiting for the day of rebellion.
In terms of personality, Kikunojo is generally gentle, caring, and nurturing towards her friends and allies, demonstrating particular concern for the well-being of others such as the young girl Tama. She is helpful and polite, but this friendly nature conceals a hardened warrior's resolve. Kikunojo possesses a strong sense of justice and does not tolerate those who degrade others, even confronting individuals of higher social standing without fear. While she intended to remain inconspicuous, her desire to do what is right can lead her to make rash decisions. Against her enemies, she is ruthless and shows no hesitation. She is deeply emotional, especially regarding the loss of her lord or when reuniting with long-lost comrades, and takes immense pride in her role as a retainer of the Kozuki clan.
Kikunojo's primary motivation is to fulfill Oden's will by opening Wano Country's borders and overthrowing the tyrannical rule of Kaido and the shogun Kurozomi Orochi. She fights to restore the Kozuki family to power and to avenge her lord’s death, demonstrating unwavering loyalty to this cause despite the twenty-year gap in her personal timeline.
Her key relationships include a deep and respectful bond with Kin'emon, whom she calls Kin-sama and was overjoyed to reunite with after their long separation. She shares a strong familial connection with her brother Izo, whom she meets again during the raid on Onigashima after decades apart. Kikunojo is a trusted ally to the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly befriending Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro, whom she assists in rescuing Tama. She also worked under the protection of Tsuru, Kin'emon's wife, who recognized Kikunojo despite her disguise. Her relationship with fellow retainer Ashura Doji is tense, as he only swore loyalty to Oden personally, not the Kozuki bloodline.
Throughout the story, Kikunojo develops from a patient spy living in the shadows to an active and decisive combatant on the front lines of the rebellion. She initially hesitates to reveal her true power to protect her cover, but eventually dons her demon mask and armor to fight openly. During the raid on Onigashima, she confronts the traitor Kanjuro, defeating him in a battle that carries heavy emotional weight due to their past as comrades. In the climactic fight against Kaido on the rooftop, Kikunojo suffers a severe injury, losing her left arm to the Emperor's attack, yet she continues to fight fiercely. Following the conclusion of the war, she is appointed as the new daimyo of her home region of Ringo.
As a warrior, Kikunojo is an extraordinarily skilled swordswoman whose strength was acknowledged by enemies like Orochi. She wields a katana with expert precision, and it is said that the wounds inflicted by her blade do not fade even in the afterlife, tormenting the souls of her foes like snow lingering in spring. Her known technique is Zansetsu Gama, which releases a circular flying slash toward her opponent. She is also a proficient user of Busoshoku Haki, known as Ryuo in Wano, and possesses the ability to use Kenbunshoku Haki.
