Description
Portgas D. Ace, also known as Fire Fist Ace, is a significant character in the anime One Piece. Born as Gol D. Ace, he was the biological son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and his partner Portgas D. Rouge, making his very existence a closely guarded secret. To protect her unborn child from the World Government, Rouge carried Ace for twenty months total and died from the strain immediately after giving birth. Ace was then raised secretly in the Goa Kingdom by the mountain bandit Curly Dadan under the oversight of Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, who had been entrusted with the child by Roger. During his childhood, Ace came to resent his late father's legacy and chose to carry his mother's surname, Portgas, to distance himself from Roger's infamous name.

During his travels he obtained the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that granted him the ability to create, control, and transform his body into fire. His reputation grew rapidly, earning him a bounty of 550 million berries and an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea, which he declined. Ace then set his sights on defeating Whitebeard in an attempt to surpass his father's legacy, challenging the Emperor repeatedly. After hundreds of failed attempts, Ace was moved by Whitebeard's acceptance and the familial atmosphere of his crew, and he eventually joined the Whitebeard Pirates, becoming the commander of the Second Division. He adopted Whitebeard as his true father figure and made it his goal to help Whitebeard become the Pirate King, finding in that crew the family and sense of belonging he had longed for.
Ace's role in the story became tragic and pivotal through his pursuit of Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard. When Teach murdered a crewmate to steal a Devil Fruit and deserted the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace took responsibility for hunting him down. Ace's confrontation with Blackbeard at Banaro Island ended in his defeat, and he was handed over to the Marines. His capture led to the announcement of a public execution, which in turn triggered the great Marineford War, as Whitebeard, his crew, allied pirates, and Luffy launched a desperate rescue attempt. Ace was freed from his execution stand, but during the escape he stepped in front of an attack from Admiral Akainu to protect Luffy, suffering a fatal wound. He died smiling, thanking his brothers and his family for loving him, having finally found peace with the answer to the question of whether his life had meaning.
