Description
Hack is a fish-man from Fish-Man Island and a loyal soldier of the Revolutionary Army. He is of the grouper species of fish-man and carries himself with the pride and discipline of a lifelong martial artist. Known by the epithet Hundred Dan Hack, he holds the rank of master in the practices of Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu, serving as an instructor who teaches these combat forms to orphaned children brought into the Revolutionary Army.
Standing over nine feet tall, Hack has a muscular physique and typically wears a traditional martial arts dogi, which reflects his serious and honorable approach to fighting. He values fair and open combat above all else, believing that genuine friendship and mutual understanding can be achieved through the honest exchange of fists. This belief extends to his views on the relationship between humans and fish-men. Rather than harboring hatred for humans who discriminate against his kind, Hack often pities them, viewing them as puppets who have lost their own voice to prejudice. He shares a deep, profound friendship with Jinbe, the future helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, and looks to him as a symbol of hope for their people.
Within the Revolutionary Army, Hack operates alongside Sabo and Koala as a trusted agent. He has a long history with the organization, having already been a member when a young, amnesiac Sabo first arrived. Hack acts as a mentor to Koala, instructing her in fish-man martial arts to the point where she becomes capable of serving as a substitute teacher herself. He respects the unique abilities of others and does not force his fighting style on those who are already skilled, such as Nico Robin, whom he encounters during the mission in Dressrosa.
Hack plays a notable role during the Dressrosa arc, where he participates in the Corrida Colosseum battle royale to help the Revolutionary Army gather information and potentially claim the Flame-Flame Fruit. He performs well in the preliminary Block B, easily defeating numerous gladiators with his signature technique, the 4,000 Tile True Punch, a powerful straight punch measured by its destructive force. However, his sense of honor leads to his downfall when he becomes enraged by the disrespectful and unserious attitude of the fighter Bartolomeo. When Hack attacks him, Bartolomeo uses his Barrier-Barrier Fruit powers to reflect the strike, shattering Hack's arm and eliminating him from the tournament.
Following his defeat, Hack is captured and transformed into a toy by the powers of Sugar, the executive of the Donquixote Pirates. While transformed into a small dog-like toy and forgotten by the world, he continues his mission, secretly using a Den Den Mushi to contact Koala and report the illegal activities transpiring beneath the colosseum. When Sugar is finally knocked unconscious, Hack is restored to his original form and rejoins his comrades. He assists in the underground trade port, helping to stop the weapon smuggling operations of the Donquixote family. Despite being a master martial artist, Hack acknowledges the vast power of the New World, and his role in Dressrosa highlights both his competence as a revolutionary and his limitations against the extraordinary abilities of Devil Fruit users. He leaves Dressrosa alongside Sabo, continuing his fight for the Revolutionary Army's cause with his arm healed by the Tontatta princess Mansherry.
