Description
Kinemon, also known as Foxfire Kinemon, is a samurai from the Kuri region of Wano Country and a central figure in the stories surrounding that isolated land. He stands an imposing 295 centimeters tall and is 36 years of age. Born into a life of trouble as a violent delinquent and gambler in the Flower Capital, his path changed forever after an incident involving the Mountain God, where he was deeply impressed by the actions of Kozuki Oden. This admiration led him to become one of Oden's first and most loyal retainers, eventually rising to become the leader of the group known as the Nine Red Scabbards.

Kinemon’s personality is a complex mixture of old-fashioned samurai pride, unwavering loyalty, and comedic contradiction. He adheres to a strict personal code, claiming he would be dishonored enough to commit seppuku for the shame of being dismembered without dying. He holds very traditional views, believing women should walk three steps behind men and speak quietly and gracefully, which often brings him into conflict with the more assertive Nami, whom he initially calls shameless and obscene. Despite these rigid ideals, he has a noted perverted streak; while outwardly outraged by revealing clothing, he has been known to enjoy the view, a trait he shares with his lord Momonosuke. He is incredibly proud and stubborn, especially toward pirates, whom the people of Wano have learned to despise. However, he is also deeply honorable and always feels indebted to those who help him, such as when he bowed to Sanji for saving his torso. He possesses a sharp mind and is considered a strategist by allies like Denjiro, though his plans often succeed as much due to incredible good fortune as careful calculation. One of his more bizarre abilities is the capacity to hold entire conversations using only his flatulence.

His core motivation is the fulfillment of his late master Oden’s will: the opening of Wano Country’s borders and the liberation of its people from the tyrannical rule of the Shogun Kurozumi Orochi and the Emperor Kaido. To achieve this goal, he participated in a plan to travel twenty years into the future using the powers of Kozuki Toki, Oden’s wife. He was sent forward with Momonosuke, Kanjuro, and Raizo to prepare for the final battle against Kaido. His role in the larger story is that of a key ally to the Straw Hat Pirates, beginning when they found him dismembered into three living pieces on the island of Punk Hazard. He initially refuses their help due to his prejudice against pirates, but eventually accepts and forms a deep bond of trust with them, particularly calling Luffy the man who will stand at the top of the seas. He serves as a primary guide and leader for the alliance formed to take down Kaido, orchestrating the elaborate plan for the raid on Onigashima.

Kinemon’s most important relationships are rooted in his duty to the Kozuki family. Though he presents himself as the father of Momonosuke to protect the boy's true identity, he is not his real father but a fiercely protective guardian and retainer. His love and loyalty are also reserved for his wife, Otsuru, whom he is overjoyed to reunite with after Kaido’s defeat. He shares a deep, unbreakable bond with his fellow Scabbards, including Denjiro, Kanjuro, Raizo, Kikunojo, and the mink leaders Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, with whom he has endured Oden’s death and a twenty-year journey through time. He also develops a notable rivalry with Roronoa Zoro, primarily over Zoro’s possession of the national treasure sword Shusui.

Throughout the story, Kinemon undergoes significant development. He transitions from a dishonorable thug in his youth to a refined and loyal samurai under Oden’s influence. When first introduced, he is a stubborn and prejudiced man who hates all pirates on principle. Through his journey with the Straw Hat crew, he overcomes this bias, growing to trust them implicitly and acknowledge them as crucial friends in his life-or-death mission. His journey is marked by perseverance, as he suffers grievous wounds, including being cut to pieces by Trafalgar Law and later being severed by Kaido, yet miraculously survives through a combination of willpower and luck.

Kinemon is a formidable combatant with several notable abilities. He ate the Fuku Fuku no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to generate clothing by placing an object like a stone or leaf on a person’s head and saying Doron. As a swordsman, he is the master of the Foxfire Style, a school of swordsmanship that allows him to both release slashes of flame and, more uniquely, to cut through any incoming fire. This technique, called Homurasaki, is so powerful he can even slice through Kaido’s Bolo Breath. He also employs Oden Two-Sword Style, using his two unranked swords named Sukesan and Kakusan to perform devastating combination attacks like the Paradise Totsuka. He is proficient in both Armament Haki, which he used to help push back Doflamingo’s Birdcage, and Observation Haki, which allowed him to sense an enemy and fight even when his severed torso was separated from his head and eyes.
