Description
Kabu is a male dwarf, also known as a Tontatta, from the Tontatta Kingdom, a hidden nation of tiny, humanoid beings known for their incredible physical strength and naivety. He serves as the leader of the Yellow Kabu Squad, a unit within the Tonta Corps, the kingdom's military force. Among his people, he appears older and noticeably chubbier than many of his peers, with a bushy tail, a pointed nose, and a prominent amount of facial hair that gives him a somewhat grizzled and wise appearance. He typically wears a dark, double-breasted coat over a button-up shirt along with a scarf, and his distinctive helmet is shaped like the large mandibles of a beetle. After the events on Dressrosa, he is often seen wearing a light-colored pirate hat bearing the jolly roger of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.

In terms of personality, Kabu is defined by a strong protective instinct towards his fellow dwarves. This was first demonstrated when he urgently warned his comrades about Nico Robin's "magical" powers, which were merely her Devil Fruit ability, showing his caution around outsiders. Despite this wariness, he shares the Tontatta tribe's defining characteristic of being incredibly gullible, easily believing promises from others. This trust in newcomers like Robin and Usopp, whom the dwarves mistakenly believed to be a great hero, allows them to quickly form alliances. Beneath his straightforward exterior, Kabu is quite perceptive, especially regarding matters of the heart. He is one of the few who understands that Princess Mansherry's difficult and demanding behavior toward the dwarf warrior Leo stems from her romantic feelings for him, a fact that he derides Leo for not recognizing.

Kabu's primary motivation is the liberation and protection of his people. He is driven by the need to rescue hundreds of his captured brethren who were forced to work as slaves in the SMILE factory under the tyrannical rule of the Donquixote Doflamingo in Dressrosa. His role in the overarching story is central to the Tontatta rebellion. He is a key participant in the operation to topple Doflamingo's regime, acting as a front-line fighter and a steadfast supporter of the plan. As a skilled warrior, he wields two sharp lances on his back, which he uses in combat. His most significant ability comes from having eaten a Zoan-class Devil Fruit, the Mushi Mushi no Mi, Model: Kabutomushi, which allows him to transform into a Japanese rhinoceros beetle. In this form, he can fly, using the powerful wings that sprout from his back to carry himself and others through the air, and he gains an immensely strong beetle horn used in charging attacks like the "Beetle Upper". Like all Tontatta, he also possesses superhuman strength far greater than his tiny size would suggest, incredible speed and agility, and the innate ability to cultivate any plant.

Throughout the Dressrosa arc, Kabu plays a significant role in the conflict. He is part of the advance team with the legendary warrior Kyros, known as the "Thunder Soldier," on a dangerous elevator infiltration mission to the royal palace to assassinate Doflamingo. During this assault, he bravely and repeatedly faces powerful executives of the Donquixote Family. He is easily defeated by the martial artist Lao G and later subdued alongside his comrade Rampo by the explosive executive Gladius, demonstrating the overwhelming power gap between the dwarves and their main adversaries. However, he refuses to stay down. After being rescued, he rejoins the fight and plays a critical part in the final act. He and Leo race to rescue Princess Mansherry, who is being held captive and forced to use her healing powers to revive the defeated officers. Kabu arrives just in time to knock the fallen villains away from her life-restoring tears, directly thwarting the enemy's plan and allowing Leo to secure the victory.

His key relationships are forged in the fires of this battle. He works in close partnership with fellow dwarves Leo, who leads their new pirate crew, and Bian, the captain of the Pink Bee Squad. He is fiercely loyal to Princess Mansherry, acting as a protector and carrying her through the sky so she can rain her healing powers across all of Dressrosa. He also develops a deep respect for Kyros, serving as his loyal subordinate during the infiltration mission. Initially suspicious of Nico Robin and Usopp, he and his people quickly come to trust and follow them as heroes.

Kabu's development from a wary soldier of a hidden tribe into a recognized and honored ally of major pirate powers is a key part of his arc. Following Doflamingo's defeat, he joins the newly formed "Straw Hat Grand Fleet" as a member of the Tontatta Pirates, a division under Leo's command, and swears fealty to Monkey D. Luffy. This new affiliation leads to his most significant deployment after Dressrosa: he is selected, alongside Leo and Bian, to serve as an official escort for the Riku royal family during the Levely, the world's most important political summit, where he helps protect Princess Rebecca as she bonds with other key royal figures. This role transforms him from a local freedom fighter into a bodyguard on the global stage, a testament to his demonstrated courage and reliability.
