Description
Om, more commonly romanized as Ohm and known by the title Skybreeder, is a character in the One Piece anime who appears as a major antagonist in the Skypiea storyline. He is one of the four priests serving under Enel, the self-proclaimed God of Skypiea, and holds a high-ranking position within God's Army. His main responsibility is to guard Upper Yard and administer the Ordeal of Iron, a deadly trial meant to punish those regarded as enemies of God.
Ohm is a Birkan, a people native to the sky islands, and like other Birkans he has a pair of small wings growing from his back. He is a tall, bald, and muscular man with tanned skin, a short beard and mustache, and small sunglasses that he wears at all times. His outfit consists of a green sleeveless shirt, gray pants with several pockets, a long white sash wrapped around his waist that resembles the one worn by Enel, and dark leather boots with bandages around the soles. Eight years before the events of the Skypiea arc, he looked much the same, except that he wore a polka-dotted shirt instead of his later plain one.
In terms of personality, Ohm is a stoic, serious, and philosophical individual. He frequently reflects on human nature and believes that people are compelled to fight one another in pursuit of happiness, even though true happiness comes from peace and the bodies of humans are fragile and destroyed by such conflict. He finds this contradiction deeply tragic and is known to weep over it. His conclusion is that the only way to save humanity is to end it, and he treats killing as a form of liberation from the burdens of life. As the guardian of Upper Yard, he spent a great deal of time working to kill anyone he encountered, carrying out his duties without hesitation. He is also extremely arrogant about his abilities and is very proud of the Ordeal of Iron's perfect record of survival, a record that held until it was broken. He speaks derisively to those who challenge him, including his fellow priests, and he takes every opportunity to boast about his power. At the same time, he has no problem explaining his techniques in detail to his opponents, and unlike some of the other priests, he carries himself with a certain degree of seriousness and honesty in his actions.
Ohm's motivations are rooted in his loyalty to Enel and his sincere belief in his own philosophy. He does not see himself as cruel for its own sake; rather, he believes that death frees people from the pain and futility of existence, and that his trials are a form of salvation. This conviction drives him to serve as a devoted enforcer of Enel's rule and to pursue and destroy anyone who trespasses on Upper Yard or challenges God's authority.
Within the story, Ohm's role begins when Enel and God's Army arrive in Skypiea from the sky island of Birka and seize control of Upper Yard roughly six years before the main plot. Ohm becomes one of Enel's priests, and he sets up his trial on Upper Yard to intercept intruders. Before the Straw Hat Pirates arrive, he is seen pursuing a man who illegally entered Upper Yard, aided by his giant dog Holy, though the pursuit is interrupted and the intruder is ultimately killed by Enel from a distance. When the Straw Hat Pirates commit offenses on Skypiea, the priests take up positions at their respective trials to punish them. Ohm controls the Ordeal of Iron, which involves hidden pressure plates on the ground that trigger Milky Dials to instantly generate barbed wire made of Iron Cloud, cutting victims to pieces when they step on the plates. He also participates directly in the trial by attacking intruders with his sword, and he can create a giant cage-like structure known as the White-Barbed Iron Deathmatch to trap opponents. In addition to the pirates, Ohm fights against the Shandia, a warrior clan opposing Enel, and he engages in combat with Wyper before being summoned away by Enel. His most significant confrontation is with the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, who manages to overcome the Ordeal of Iron and eventually defeats Ohm in battle, marking the first time the trial claims no victory.
Ohm's key relationships define much of his role. He serves Enel with complete loyalty as one of his priests, and he holds the other three priests, Shura, Satori, and Gedatsu, in low regard, often mocking their abilities while boasting about his own. His bond with his dog Holy is notably close; Holy acts not only as his steed but as a trained combat partner that fights alongside him with an almost human level of skill. Ohm also has encounters with Gan Fall, the former God of Skypiea, and is able to spar with him on equal terms, demonstrating his considerable strength. His battle with Zoro is the most important relationship in terms of his development, as it forces him to face an opponent whose determination and skill exceed what his foresight can handle.
In terms of development, Ohm undergoes a shift during his fight with Zoro. He begins the battle supremely confident in his Mantra, his sword, and his perfect trial record, but Zoro's refusal to fall and his ability to counter Ohm's attacks gradually break that confidence. When Zoro successfully deflects the Eisen Whip, Ohm is completely stunned, and his eventual defeat shows a more measured side of him. He responds to the loss with respect for Zoro's strength, acknowledging the swordsman's abilities rather than offering excuses. This reveals that beneath his arrogance, Ohm honors genuine skill and is capable of recognizing when he has been surpassed.
Ohm's notable abilities make him one of the most formidable fighters on Skypiea. As one of Enel's four priests, his power is described as being below only Enel himself among God's Army. He is a skilled user of Mantra, the sky-island form of Observation Haki, which allows him to sense the presence of everyone on Upper Yard, keep track of his fellow priests and intruders, locate hidden opponents, and predict their movements in combat. His main weapon is the Eisen Whip, a sword whose blade is made of Iron Cloud generated by an Eisen Dial at the hilt. Iron Cloud has the toughness and sharpness of iron while remaining freely movable like a normal cloud, and Ohm can reshape it at will. He can extend the blade over long distances to strike from afar, transform it into a long lance known as the Eisen Fleuret to pierce opponents, or reshape it into a solid iron wall to block incoming attacks. The Eisen Whip has enough cutting power to shatter thick stone walls, and combined with his Mantra, it allows him to strike with incredible speed and unpredictability. Ohm is also called a skybreeder because of his exceptional talent for training animals, as demonstrated by Holy, whom he has trained in hand-to-hand combat to an extraordinarily human-like degree. Together with his dials, his Mantra, and his trained companion, Ohm presents a serious threat to nearly anyone who enters his territory, and his presence in the Skypiea arc establishes him as a dangerous and memorable opponent for the Straw Hat Pirates.
