Description
Maître Chavipère is the French name used in the One Piece anime and manga for the character originally known as Nekomamushi. He is one of the two rulers of the Mokomo Dukedom, a nation of anthropomorphic animal people called Minks, which is located on the back of the massive ancient elephant Zunesha. As a cat Mink with yellow fur, Chavipère holds the title of the King of the Twilight, governing the island from six o'clock in the evening until six o'clock in the morning, while his counterpart Inuarashi, a dog Mink, rules the other half of the day.
His background is deeply tied to the history of the Kozuki Family from the country of Wano. Chavipère, along with Inuarashi, served as retainers to Kozuki Oden and later to his son Kozuki Momonosuke. This loyalty extends to the entire Mink tribe, who consider themselves a family allied with the Kozuki. Chavipère’s devotion is such that he willingly lost an arm to protect the ninja Raizo, a retainer of the Kozuki, demonstrating his willingness to sacrifice his own body for those he serves.
In terms of personality, Chavipère is bold, energetic, and somewhat impulsive. He awakens with a loud roar that can be heard across the entire country of Zou, and he immediately rushes to the battlefield upon learning of an attack. Despite suffering serious injuries, he can be carefree, as shown when he ignores warnings from Tony Tony Chopper and plays with a ball, causing his wounds to reopen. This insouciance contrasts with his fierce combat ability and sense of duty. His unique laughter is rendered as goronyanya, a trait common among One Piece characters.
Chavipère’s primary motivation is the protection of his people, the Minks, and the fulfillment of his oath to the Kozuki family. He harbors a deep resentment toward the enemies of the Kozuki, particularly Kaido and the Beast Pirates, and he actively seeks to assist in the liberation of Wano. His role in the story is initially that of a powerful ally to the Straw Hat Pirates when they arrive on Zou. He provides crucial information and combat support, later joining the alliance to confront Kaido. His relationship with Inuarashi is complex; they share a mutual respect but often quarrel, representing the two halves of the same leadership. He also holds a protective stance toward the Mink tribe and younger retainers like Carrot and Pedro.
Over the course of the story, Chavipère shows character development through his willingness to put aside old grudges and work with Inuarashi and other allies for a common goal. His journey from a regional ruler to a key player in the fight against an Emperor highlights his growth in leadership and sacrifice.
Regarding notable abilities, as a Mink, Chavipère possesses the inherent physical traits of his animal form: enhanced strength, speed, agility, and sharp claws. He is a formidable warrior, capable of taking on powerful opponents like Jack of the Beast Pirates. He also wields the Mink tribe’s signature combat technique, Electro, which allows him to generate and channel electricity through his body to enhance his attacks. His mastery of Electro, combined with his ferocious fighting style, makes him one of the strongest warriors on Zou. Although he lost an arm in battle, he continues to fight with undiminished resolve, adapting his techniques accordingly.
