Description
Doctor Hiluluk is a character from the anime, recognized as a self-proclaimed quack doctor from Drum Island who became a father figure to Tony Tony Chopper. Standing at an impressive 213 centimeters, he had a distinctive appearance marked by long, gray hair arranged in three upright spikes, a black goatee and mustache, and a black hat worn over his cross-shaped white hair.

His background reveals a dramatic transformation. In his early days, Hiluluk was a thief who was diagnosed with a fatal illness. What he believed cured him was not a medicine but the serene vision of a grove of cherry blossoms. Following this experience, he became convinced that no disease in the world is incurable and decided to dedicate his life to medicine, returning to his birthplace of Drum Island. His primary motivation was to heal what he saw as the country's sickness of the heart, a frozen and selfish state brought about by the tyrannical rule of King Wapol.

Personality-wise, Hiluluk was an exceedingly eccentric man who would test his experimental medications on unsuspecting patients, often causing more harm than good and forcing him to flee from his results. Despite his questionable medical skills, he possessed a deep and genuine compassion for others. He never desired rewards for his efforts and honestly tried his best to cure people of their afflictions. This compassion extended to animals, most notably when he encountered a wounded reindeer cub who attacked him out of fear. To gain its trust, Hiluluk stripped off his clothes in the freezing snow to prove he carried no weapons, a powerful demonstration of his unconventional but sincere nature.

His role in the story is almost entirely defined by his relationship with Tony Tony Chopper. Taking on the role of a surrogate father, he named the reindeer Chopper, cared for him, and taught him the ideals of a doctor. He instilled in Chopper the belief that a pirate flag, which he called a symbol of conviction that defies the impossible, represented a life of freedom and purpose. Their relationship, though short, was extremely strong and filled with arguments and affection. When Hiluluk realized he was terminally ill, he cruelly drove Chopper away to spare him the pain of watching his mentor die. In a tragic turn, Chopper, wanting to help, brought him a poisonous mushroom thinking it was a cure. Knowing it would kill him, Hiluluk ate the mushroom soup with joy, telling Chopper he was cured, to protect his student's feelings and encourage his dream of becoming a doctor.

His development culminates in his final act. With his life shortened to mere hours by the poison, Hiluluk learned that King Wapol had set a trap for him at the castle. Knowing it was a trick, he went anyway and, seeing that the kingdom's doctors were healthy, he declared his happiness that there were no patients. Refusing to let Wapol kill him, he gave an inspiring speech about what it means to truly die. He stated that a person dies not when they are shot, nor when they are ill, but when they are forgotten. He then chose to end his own life by drinking a bomb-laced medicine, producing a massive explosion that left only his hat behind, ensuring that Chopper would not have to live with the guilt of having poisoned him. His final declaration was that he had lived a wonderful life.

Key relationships beyond Chopper were significant. He shared a friendly connection with Doctor Kureha, the only other free doctor on the island, whom he trusted for a medical diagnosis and to whom he entrusted his final wishes: to complete his research and train Chopper. Dalton, the royal guard who would later become the country's leader, originally thought him a quack but was deeply moved by Hiluluks courage and sacrifice, inspiring him to finally defy Wapol. The Isshi-20, Wapol's team of twenty elite doctors, saw him as a role model despite their superior skills, as his selfless actions rekindled their own work ethics. Even the people of the country, who once chased him away, were ultimately affected by his dream.

Regarding notable abilities, Hiluluk was far from a competent physician. He was known as a quack whose treatments were often worse than the disease. His true skill lay in chemistry. Despite his failures as a doctor, he spent thirty years working on a single scientific experiment to create a cherry blossom powder that could bloom in the snow of the winter island. His life's work was to create this visual miracle, which he believed could cure the frozen hearts of the people. He also possessed decent marksmanship, using a tranquilizer gun and a rifle, as well as using bombs for escape. Ultimately, his most notable ability was not medical but inspirational; his dream was only realized after his death when Doctor Kureha blasted his completed powder into the sky, turning the falling snow into beautiful pink cherry blossoms, fulfilling his promise and healing the country's spirit, leading them to rename themselves the Sakura Kingdom.
