Description
Nefertari Bibi, also known under her Baroque Works code name Miss Wednesday, is the princess of the desert kingdom of Alabasta. As a member of the Nefertari family, she is a descendant of one of the twenty founding families of the World Government, though her ancestors notably chose to remain in Alabasta rather than ascend to become Celestial Dragons in Mary Geoise.
As a child, Bibi was adventurous and strong-willed, even getting into a physical altercation with her future friend Koza when they first met. Despite her youth, she demonstrated remarkable diplomatic wisdom at the World Conference when she endured a physical assault from King Wapol of Drum Island, calmly apologizing to prevent an international incident. At the age of fourteen, she and her loyal bodyguard Igaram infiltrated the criminal syndicate Baroque Works to uncover why the organization was destabilizing her homeland, operating undercover for two years without being discovered.
In terms of personality, Bibi completely defies the stereotype of a needy or arrogant princess. She is deeply selfless and responsible, often putting the needs of her citizens and friends far above her own comfort or safety. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty, performing tasks that would be considered beneath her royal station, such as washing dishes. While she is kind and slow to anger, Bibi possesses immense courage and determination, willing to stand up against overwhelmingly powerful enemies like the Warlord Crocodile for the sake of her country. She has a habit of giving people nicknames and tends to bite her bottom lip when anxious.
Bibi's primary motivation throughout the Alabasta arc is to save her kingdom from a civil war secretly engineered by Crocodile. She loves her father, King Cobra, and her homeland more than anything, and she carries the weight of their survival on her shoulders. Her greatest fear is seeing her people kill each other over a conflict they do not understand, which drives her to risk her life repeatedly to stop the rebellion.
Her role in the story becomes central during the Alabasta Saga. After her cover as a Baroque Works agent is blown at Whisky Peak, she accepts the protection of the Straw Hat Pirates and travels with them to her homeland. Although she fights alongside them, she is not officially a member of the crew, though she is deeply bonded to them as a dear friend and ally. The emotional climax of her arc occurs when she chooses to remain in Alabasta to rebuild her nation after Crocodile's defeat, rather than continuing to sail with Luffy. The silent farewell, where the crew raises their arms to show the X mark on their forearms, symbolizes their eternal bond of friendship.
Bibi maintains significant relationships with several characters. Her bond with Monkey D. Luffy is particularly strong; she learns from him that a leader must bear responsibility for their crew and country, and she trusts him implicitly to defeat villains she cannot handle alone. She forms a close friendship with Nami, often serving as a calming presence to the navigator's more fiery temper. Her childhood friendship with Koza becomes tragically strained as he leads the rebel army against her father, though they reconcile once Crocodile's deception is exposed. Her pet spot-billed duck, Karoo, is her constant companion and a loyal friend who carries her through the desert and into battle.
Throughout the narrative, Bibi demonstrates significant personal development. She begins as a spy who feels she must handle everything alone, but through her journey with the Straw Hats, she learns the value of trusting others and asking for help. By the time she returns to Alabasta, she has matured from a desperate princess into a confident leader capable of addressing her people directly to stop the war. Later in the story, she continues to represent Alabasta at the World Conference, and it is revealed that she has become a target of the mysterious ruler Im, who holds an interest in her due to her ancestor Nefertari D. Lily.
As for her abilities, Bibi is not a superhuman fighter like the main crew members, but she is highly agile and possesses considerable physical endurance, able to withstand pain from gunshot wounds. Her primary weapon is the Peacock Slasher, a sharp jewel attached to a string or chain connected to a ring on her little finger, which she spins rapidly to create a slashing attack. She also knows a hypnotic dance called the Mermaidance, which can mesmerize opponents, though she rarely uses it in direct combat. Her greatest strengths are her infiltration skills, diplomatic tact, and unwavering courage in the face of despair.
