TV-Series
Description
Issho, more widely known by his alias Fujitora, is an admiral in the Marines. He was conscripted into the organization through a World Military Draft during the two-year timeskip following the Summit War of Marineford. This draft was implemented to fill the admiral vacancies created when Kuzan left the Marines and Sakazuki was promoted to Fleet Admiral. Fujitora was brought in alongside another powerful newcomer, Ryokugyu, marking him as one of the World Government's greatest military assets.
In terms of appearance, Fujitora is a tall, muscular man with short dark hair, a mustache, and a beard. He is blind, a condition signified by the visible white of his eyes, which he typically keeps closed. He has a large, X-shaped scar centered on the left side of his forehead that stretches over both eyes, a mark he inflicted upon himself. His attire differs from the standard suit worn by other high-ranking officers; he wears a light-purple yukata held by a dark purple belt, covered by a purple cloak with a standard marine coat draped over his shoulders like a cape. He walks with a shikomizue, a Japanese swordstick that functions as both a concealed blade and a cane to aid his blindness, and he wears traditional geta sandals.
Fujitora possesses a deeply principled personality, defined by a strong sense of honor and compassion, which often puts him at odds with the Marines' official doctrine of Absolute Justice. He is a gentle, soft-spoken, and reasonable man who prioritizes the safety and well-being of innocent civilians above his duty to capture criminals, a stance that contrasts sharply with many of his colleagues. He is profoundly disgusted by the evil and corruption he has witnessed in the world, a revulsion so intense that he chose to blind himself years ago to avoid seeing further injustice. Despite this, he later expressed regret for this decision, as it has prevented him from seeing the faces of good people worth protecting.
A significant aspect of his character is his disdain for the Seven Warlords of the Sea system, which he views as a corrupt institution that protects criminal pirates like Donquixote Doflamingo. He is vocal in his opposition to this system and actively works towards its abolition. Fujitora is also an avid gambler, frequently seen playing roulette or making decisions based on the roll of a dice. This gambling motif extends to his combat style, where he often takes enormous risks, such as summoning meteors that could cause catastrophic collateral damage, trusting in the abilities of his allies or enemies to mitigate the fallout. He is modest, rarely commenting on his own power, but possesses a fierce sense of pride that prevents him from apologizing for his actions or decisions, even when directly ordered by his superior, Fleet Admiral Sakazuki.
Fujitora was first mentioned when Fleet Admiral Sakazuki assigned him to handle the alliance between the Straw Hat Pirates and the Heart Pirates on the island of Dressrosa. He arrived under the guise of a civilian gambler, where he encountered Monkey D. Luffy. After Luffy exposed a group of thugs cheating him, Fujitora thanked him but felt obligated to attempt his capture, creating a complex dynamic between gratitude and duty. His primary role in the Dressrosa Arc was to investigate and neutralize the threat posed by Doflamingo. However, after witnessing the TyRanny of the warlord and the World Government's willingness to cover up the atrocities to protect the status quo, Fujitora made a pivotal decision. He chose not to fight Doflamingo himself, instead allowing Luffy to defeat him. Following the battle, Fujitora performed a public act of profound significance: he knelt before King Riku Dold III and the citizens of Dressrosa, formally apologizing on behalf of the Marines and the World Government for their failure to protect them. This act, broadcast for the world to see, was a deliberate attempt to expose the flaws of the Warlord system and ensure the truth could not be hidden as it had been in the past, an action that drew the ire of the World Government.
His key relationships are defined by his professional role and personal ideals. He is respected by his subordinates, including Vice Admirals Bastille and Maynard, for his compassion. His relationship with Fleet Admiral Sakazuki is tense; while Sakazuki initially trusted him with a critical mission, he became furious at Fujitora's public apology and his refusal to capture Luffy and Law, ultimately banning him from marine bases until he rectified his failure. Fujitora, however, refuses to apologize for his actions, which he believes were just. He shares a close ideological bond with Vice Admiral Smoker, as both men share a deep distrust of the Warlords and a desire to see the system dismantled.
Throughout the Dressrosa Arc, Fujitora undergoes a subtle but important development. Initially presented as a seemingly carefree and neutral gambler, his core motivations crystallize into a focused resolve. His decision to publicly shame the World Government and risk his career demonstrates a shift from passive observer to active reformer. He is willing to sacrifice his reputation and position to achieve the systemic change he believes in, placing his abstract sense of justice above his direct duty to the chain of command.
Fujitora is an exceptionally powerful fighter, possessing the Zushi Zushi no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants him the ability to manipulate gravitational forces. This power allows him a wide range of abilities, from levitating massive amounts of rubble and crushing opponents with intense pressure to creating repulsive barriers. His most spectacular and signature move is reaching into space to pull down meteors, which he uses as devastating offensive projectiles. He typically channels these powers through his sword, using techniques such as Gravito, which presses enemies into deep craters, and Moko, or Fierce Tiger, which unleashes a devastating horizontal wave of gravity capable of destroying city blocks. Despite his blindness, Fujitora is a masterful swordsman and relies on highly developed Kenbunshoku Haki, or Observation Haki, to sense the presence, aura, and intent of all things around him, allowing him to perceive his environment, predict attacks, and fight effectively against incredibly fast opponents like Luffy and Zoro. He is also a proficient user of Busoshoku Haki, or Armament Haki, which he uses to harden his blade and body for both offensive and defensive purposes.
