Description
Crocodile, also known as Sir Crocodile and formerly operating under the code name Mr. 0, is a major antagonist in the One Piece series who later becomes a complex anti-hero and rival. He was first introduced as a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, a group of powerful pirates allied with the World Government, and served as the president of the secret crime syndicate Baroque Works. Before the main storyline, Crocodile was a rising pirate with dreams of becoming the Pirate King. His ambition was brutally crushed by a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Emperor Whitebeard, an event that fundamentally changed his worldview and set him on a darker path.

Standing over eight feet tall, Crocodile is an imposing figure with a distinctive appearance. He has a large, slicked-back hairstyle, a prominent horizontal scar crossing his face, and always wears a dark suit with a fur-lined coat draped over his shoulders like wings. He constantly smokes a cigar and has a characteristic deep, rumbling laugh that sounds like "Kuhahahaha." Most notable is his left hand, which is a massive golden hook. Beneath this golden casing is a deadly, poison-tipped hook coated with a powerful scorpion venom capable of corroding stone, meaning any wound he inflicts is often fatal unless treated immediately.

His personality is defined by cynical pragmatism and immense pride. Having been defeated in the New World, he came to despise the romantic ideals of pirate life, such as dreams and trust in comrades, which he considers foolish and worthless. He is extremely self-assured, calm under pressure, and possesses a business-like cunning, orchestrating complex plans from the shadows. However, this confidence borders on arrogance, as he rarely sees others as threats, a flaw that ultimately contributed to his downfall against Monkey D. Luffy. He is ruthlessly efficient, showing no hesitation in killing subordinates or civilians who fail him or are no longer useful. Despite his cruelty, he operates with a twisted sense of pride, famously refusing to attack a weakened Whitebeard during the Summit War because it would have been dishonorable, preferring to face him at full strength.

Crocodile's central role in the story begins as the mastermind of the Alabasta Kingdom's civil war. Using his position as a hero who protects the nation from pirates, he secretly used a weather-altering substance called Dance Powder to create a drought, blaming the suffering on the ruling royal family. His ultimate goal was to acquire the ancient weapon Pluton, which was hidden within Alabasta, believing that military power was the only way to counter the World Government. After being defeated and imprisoned by Luffy, he was later released from the maximum-security prison Impel Down to aid in the escape of Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace. During the ensuing Summit War at Marineford, he acted as a wild card, attacking both the Navy and Whitebeard, but ultimately fought alongside Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates out of disdain for the Marines' self-righteousness. After the timeskip, he has resurfaced in the New World as a co-founder of the Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk, using Buggy as a figurehead leader to control the organization and place bounties on Marines.

His key relationships are largely transactional, though a few hold specific weight. He views Nico Robin primarily as a tool necessary for deciphering the Rio Poneglyph to find Pluton, though she later betrayed him. He holds a deep-seated grudge against Whitebeard, whom he sees as the source of his greatest shame. Conversely, he respects raw determination and power, as seen when he acknowledges Luffy's tenacity after failing to kill him multiple times. He shares a specific loyalty with his former direct subordinate, Daz Bones (Mr. 1), who remains his partner even after their imprisonment. A mysterious past connection with Emporio Ivankov gives the latter leverage over Crocodile, as he holds a secret that Crocodile is deeply embarrassed by. Throughout the series, Crocodile undergoes significant development. He transitions from a purely selfish, calculating villain who trusts no one to a more pragmatic, if still ruthless, operator who will fight on behalf of others if it serves his interests or irritates a mutual enemy. His time alongside Luffy in prison and at Marineford seems to reignite his dormant ambition, leading him to finally return to the New World rather than remain apathetic.

Notably, his original bounty was only 81 million Berries, but the series creator has stated this does not reflect his true power due to the circumstances of his warlord appointment. After the events of the Wano Country arc, his current active bounty has been updated to 1.965 billion Berries. He possesses the Logia-type Sand-Sand Fruit, which allows him to turn his body into sand, manipulate the element, and create devastating sandstorms or blades. His primary ability allows him to dehydrate any object or living being instantly with his right hand, turning humans into mummified corpses and the ground into desert sand. His weakness is exposure to any liquid, which solidifies his sandy body and allows physical strikes to hit him. Despite this, he is a formidable physical fighter and has been confirmed to possess both Armament and Observation Haki, making him a threat even in environments not favorable to his Devil Fruit powers.
