Description
Philionel El Di Seyruun, commonly called Phil, is the crown prince of the Holy Kingdom of Seyruun in the anime series The Slayers. His father, King Eldoran Seyruun, is technically still the ruling sovereign, but the elderly and bedridden king is unable to govern, so Philionel effectively runs the country in his place. He is considered the royal family member most trusted to one day take the throne, having survived numerous assassination attempts over the years.

Philionel has two daughters, Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun and Gracia Ul Naga Seyruun, the elder of whom is better known as Naga the Serpent. His wife was killed by an assassin named Booley some years before the main events of the series, and Gracia left the family as a result of that tragedy. He also has two brothers, Christopher Wil Brogg Seyruun and Randionel Seyruun, and a nephew, Alfred Seyruun, and the assassination plots against him were orchestrated by Christopher and Alfred in an effort to seize the succession.

In personality, Philionel strongly resembles his younger daughter Amelia in his deep conviction in justice. He describes himself as a pacifist, but his behavior openly contradicts this label: whenever he encounters something he considers unjust, he reacts with immediate and overwhelming physical force. His shaggy hair and beard and his sturdy, dwarf-like build give him the appearance of a bandit rather than a prince, yet he is warmly regarded and respected by the people of Seyruun.

His motivations are rooted in a sense of royal duty, devotion to his family, and a sincere wish to protect the innocent and preserve peace. His understanding of justice is simple and absolute, and he applies it without hesitation even when his methods look more like violence than pacifism. Philionel serves as a recurring supporting character throughout the anime, appearing most prominently in the story arc dealing with the conspiracy against his life. When the sorceress Lina Inverse and her companions become involved, he cooperates with them to expose the plot, and his daughter Amelia later travels with Lina partly because she admires her father and wants to carry his ideals of justice into the wider world.

Philionel's development is shaped largely by loss and betrayal. The murder of his wife and the treachery of his brother and nephew could have embittered him, but he instead maintains a resilient mindset, fulfills his responsibilities as crown prince, and handles the aftermath of the conspiracy with generosity and composure. His relationship with Amelia is close and affectionate, and she sees him as an ideal of strength and free-spirited conviction. His bond with Gracia is more distant, as she left the kingdom after their mother's death. With Lina, he shares a cordial but frequently comedic rapport, as both are strong-willed and quick to impose their own sense of order on a situation.

In terms of ability, Philionel is unusual among the Seyruun royals in that he possesses no magical powers at all. Instead, he relies on extraordinary physical strength, which is sufficient to defeat even lesser demons with his bare hands. His fighting style consists of powerful strikes given ironic, peace-themed names, including Pacifist Crush, Kindness to All Creatures Kick, Benevolent Giant Swing, and Goodwill Towards Man Smash. These attacks reflect his core contradiction: a man who declares himself a pacifist yet meets every threat to justice with overwhelming, uncompromising force.
