Description
Parn is the central character of the anime Record of Lodoss War and its related animated works. He is the protagonist of the 1990 original video animation series, and he appears again as a supporting figure in the later television series Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, which takes place years after his main adventures.
In terms of background, Parn is a young swordsman from the village of Zaxon, located in the northern region of the Kingdom of Alania. He is the son of Tessius, a former holy knight of the Kingdom of Valis who was expelled from the knighthood under a cloud of disgrace and who later died in a war against the Kingdom of Flaim before his name could be cleared. Because of his father's tarnished reputation, Parn grew up feeling looked down upon and ostracized by the people of his village, even though he privately idolized his father's memory and believed him to have been a kind and honorable man. Before the story begins, Parn spent two years serving as a young mercenary in Flaim, and at the start of the narrative he is roughly eighteen years old, earnest and determined but still inexperienced as a fighter.
Parn's personality is defined by a strong sense of justice, a compassionate nature, and a deep desire to help others. He is a cheerful and honest young man, but he is also hot-blooded, impulsive, and stubborn. He is quick to anger and frequently rushes headlong into danger without thinking through the consequences, a trait that gets him and his companions into trouble on more than one occasion. His rashness is balanced by an unwavering sense of honor and a willingness to stand up for those who cannot protect themselves, qualities that draw others to him even when his recklessness frustrates them.
His primary motivations are to discover the truth about his father's disgrace, to restore honor to his family name, and to become a worthy knight. He wants to prove himself and to live up to the ideals he associates with knighthood, and his earnest desire to do what is right repeatedly pulls him into the larger conflicts engulfing the island of Lodoss. Rather than seeking power or personal glory, he is driven by loyalty to his friends and by a conviction that the weak should be protected.
Parn's role in the story begins when a goblin attack on his village forces him to leave home and sets him on the path of adventure. Along with his companions, he becomes involved in the political and military struggles between the holy kingdom of Valis and the empire of Marmo, and he eventually comes into direct conflict with Karla the Grey Witch, a mysterious figure who has secretly manipulated the island's history for centuries. Over the course of the wars, Parn fights as a holy knight of Valis, and his deeds have a major influence on the course of the conflict. Afterward, he chooses to leave the formal knightly order and becomes known as the Free Knight, a warrior bound to no single nation who wanders Lodoss helping those in need. In the later television series, set years after his youth, he appears as a veteran hero in his thirties who is serving with the Kano Free Army, helping Prince Leona liberate the Kingdom of Kano from the rule of Marmo. He also serves as a mentor to the young warrior Spark, who admires him greatly. Near the end of his arc, Parn is granted the honorary title of Knight of Lodoss by King Kashue of Flaim, a title that gives him the right to attend and speak at the councils of the island's kings, reflecting the immense respect he has earned across all of Lodoss.
Parn's key relationships anchor his growth throughout the story. His most important bond is with Deedlit, a high elf from the Forest of No Return. They meet early in his journey, and although she initially teases him, she gradually comes to admire his sense of honor, his dedication, and even his impulsive nature. Their relationship deepens into a romantic one, and Deedlit faithfully accompanies him through the wars and remains his partner for the rest of his life. His childhood best friend is Etoh, a thoughtful young man who becomes a priest of the supreme god Falis and who travels with Parn from the very beginning. The dwarf warrior Ghim serves as an early mentor figure, and his training helps Parn develop from a reckless novice into a proper swordsman. The magician Slayn and the thief Woodchuck are also loyal companions during his adventures. Parn holds King Kashue of Flaim in particularly high regard as an ideal and an instructor, and even at the height of his own skill he cannot match Kashue's mastery. His greatest rival is Ashram, the dark knight of Marmo, and Parn's growth as a warrior is measured by his ability to eventually stand against Ashram in combat. In the later series, his relationship with Spark is equally significant, as Spark idolizes Parn and Parn in turn sees his own impetuous younger self reflected in the young warrior.
Parn's development follows a clear arc from reckless youth to capable and respected fighter. Through training, experience, and the guidance of mentors such as Ghim and Kashue, he learns the difference between bravery and recklessness and comes to understand the responsibilities that come with wielding a sword in a war. He becomes more cooperative and more willing to trust his companions, and he matures into a calm and composed man who is not swayed by his own fame. Notably, he is offered the chance to become king on several occasions, including in Valis and Alania, but he refuses every time, choosing instead to remain a free knight and to devote himself to aiding ordinary people. In his later years, he retires with Deedlit to a modest home at the edge of the Forest of No Return, where the two live quietly together.
In terms of notable abilities, Parn begins the story as a brave but unskilled fighter who relies mostly on enthusiasm. He inherits his father's longsword and suit of plate armor, the latter with its identifying crest filed away, and he later receives newly made holy knight equipment as a reward for his deeds. During his time in Flaim, he obtains a set of enchanted weapons and armor, including a sword and shield. Through rigorous practice and real combat, he steadily improves until he becomes one of the finest swordsmen on Lodoss. His signature technique is an extremely fast thrust that impresses even King Kashue, although the move leaves him open, so he uses it only sparingly against powerful opponents. By the end of his journey, his fighting style incorporates techniques drawn from the many great warriors he has fought alongside or against, making him a versatile and formidable fighter in his own right.
