Description
Pirotess is a dark elf from the island of Marmo who appears in Record of Lodoss War and the related Legend of Crystania stories, where she is also known as Sheru. She is regarded as one of the finest warriors among the dark elves, a figure of graceful beauty and deadly skill. In appearance, she is a tall, slender elf with dark skin, very long white hair in the anime, though some depictions give her blonde hair, yellow or amber eyes, and long pointed elf ears. She fights primarily with a sword and also practices spirit magic, combining physical combat with supernatural abilities. Only two characters are generally considered her match in skill: the high elf Deedlit and the human knight Ashram, whose own prowess surpasses what is normally possible for a human.
Pirotess was originally sent as an assassin to kill Ashram, the Black Knight of Marmo, but she was ultimately won over by his strength of will and personal force. She became his loyal subordinate and later his lover. Her brother Astal died in an incident at Fire Dragon Mountain, and her feelings toward Ashram shifted over time from hatred to deep affection. She is fully devoted to him and rarely leaves his side, and she shows remarkable determination to complete whatever mission she undertakes.
Her role in the story is closely tied to the conflict between Marmo and the island of Lodoss. The wizard Wagnard orders her to capture Deedlit, a high elf whose life is needed as a sacrifice to revive the dark goddess Kardis. Pirotess confronts Deedlit and her allies, but she is unable to complete the capture. Rather than return to Marmo and answer for her failure, she instead goes to Fire Dragon Mountain to join Ashram.
