Description
Hermit Crane, also known as Master Shen or the Crane Hermit, is a character from the original Dragon Ball manga and anime, recognized as the founder of the Crane School, a martial arts school that serves as a dark counterpart to the Turtle School led by his lifelong rival, Master Roshi. He is also the older brother of the notorious assassin, Mercenary Tao.

The background of Hermit Crane is directly tied to the history of Earth's martial arts. In his youth, he and Master Roshi were fellow students under the tutelage of the great Master Mutaito. During this period, they were comrades, and Hermit Crane was a talented but ruthless student. However, their master was ultimately killed while using the Evil Containment Wave to seal away the demon king Piccolo. While Master Roshi took this as a lesson about the dangers of power and the importance of humility, Hermit Crane became disillusioned and embittered by the shame of his master's death. This traumatic event caused his heart to darken, leading him to abandon the path of honor and found his own school, the Crane School, which taught martial arts for assassination and personal glory, directly opposing the philosophy of Roshi's Turtle School.

Personality-wise, Hermit Crane is characterized by his profound arrogance, sadistic nature, and unforgiving grudge-holding. He is extremely confident in his own superiority and that of his students, often boasting about their abilities. He shares many negative traits with his brother Tao, including a willingness to eliminate anyone who opposes him, making him an adversary without a moral compass. Despite this, he does possess a few standards; unlike many other villains, he understood the catastrophic threat King Piccolo posed to the world and refrained from attempting to free him, showing he was not entirely reckless. His deep-seated bitterness and need for validation stem from a feeling of having been humiliated by his master's failure, a wound he has never healed.

In the story, Hermit Crane serves as the main antagonist of the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament saga. He enters his two star students, Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu, into the tournament with the explicit goal of defeating Master Roshi's students, Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha, and proving the supremacy of his Crane School. When he learns that Goku had previously defeated his brother Tao, he orders Tien to kill Goku in the final match. After his students fail to follow his orders, he attempts to have Chiaotzu kill both Goku and the rebellious Tien, leading to a confrontation where he is driven off by Master Roshi's Kamehameha. He later returns for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament with a rebuilt, cyborg version of his brother, Tao, seeking revenge on Tien for his betrayal. However, Tien easily defeats Tao, and Hermit Crane is forced to flee, humiliated once again.

The key relationships of Hermit Crane define his role. His relationship with Master Roshi is one of bitter rivalry and a dark mirror; where Roshi is a lecherous but wise mentor, Hermit Crane is a cold and ruthless teacher who views his students as tools. His relationship with his brother Tao appears to be one of genuine care, as he seeks to avenge him and later cheers for his success. His students, Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu, are initially trained to be ruthless assassins. However, Tien ultimately rejects his master's violent and dishonorable teachings after being moved by Master Roshi's words, creating a major point of conflict. In a moment of pettiness and cruelty, Hermit Crane strikes Chiaotzu for a trivial reason and later tries to have him kill his own best friend.

Regarding development, Hermit Crane experiences little change and serves largely as a static character who represents the path of corruption and pride that Tien must reject to grow. After his defeats at the 22nd and 23rd tournaments, he is shamed and seemingly abandons his quest for vengeance. In later years, he is not seen again in the main timeline, implying he eventually passed away.

In terms of notable abilities, Hermit Crane is a highly skilled master of ki manipulation. He is the creator of the Dodonpa, a powerful and concentrated beam of energy fired from the finger, which he developed as the Crane School's answer to the Kamehameha. The Dodonpa is considered an assassin's technique, designed to pierce through a target's vital organs with a narrow, lethal blast. He is also proficient in the Bukujutsu technique, which allows him to fly, and is shown to possess telepathic abilities, which he uses to communicate with his students during the tournament. He is also incredibly fast and possesses physical strength comparable to Master Roshi, allowing him to catch bullets with ease.
