Description
Launch is a human woman who first appears in the original Dragon Ball series, notable for a unique biological condition that causes her to involuntarily switch between two distinct personalities every time she sneezes. In her primary state, she has blue hair and a gentle, sweet, and pure‑hearted demeanor, always willing to help others and perform domestic chores. However, a single sneeze instantly transforms her hair to blonde and replaces her personality with a loud, short‑tempered, and violent criminal who is proficient with firearms and heavy weaponry. This second persona is aggressive, often robbing banks or shooting at anyone who angers her, yet she is not entirely malevolent and eventually befriends the main characters. The two personalities have no memory of each other’s actions.
Launch is introduced when Goku and Krillin are tasked by Master Roshi to find him a date as payment for martial arts training. They spot Launch fleeing from the police while shooting a shotgun, but after she sneezes, the blue‑haired version appears confused and agrees to accompany them. She becomes a live‑in caretaker at Kame House, cooking and cleaning for Roshi and his students, though her sneezes frequently cause chaos when the blonde personality emerges. Her role in the story is primarily comedic and supportive, providing a contrast between domestic normalcy and sudden, unpredictable danger. She is one of the few human characters who does not train in martial arts, relying instead on her wits and the blonde personality’s combat instincts.
A key turning point in her character development occurs during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, where she is awed by Tien Shinhan’s skill and develops a strong infatuation with him. The blonde version is particularly drawn to Tien’s coldness and power. After the tournament, Launch follows Tien and Chiaotzu during their travels and training, often bringing supplies or simply staying nearby. Her unreciprocated crush becomes a recurring subplot that defines her later appearances.
As the series transitions into Dragon Ball Z, Launch’s presence diminishes sharply. She appears only briefly in an anime‑exclusive scene during the Majin Buu saga, where she is seen donating energy to the Spirit Bomb. According to the series’ creator, Launch continued to pursue Tien after the original series. They eventually found each other and lived together for a short time, but she was not suited to the farming lifestyle, and Tien showed no romantic interest, so she left. She continues to visit him occasionally.
Launch possesses no superhuman abilities; her defining trait is her involuntary transformation. The blue‑haired personality is kind, polite, and somewhat timid, while the blonde personality is fearless, resourceful, and highly skilled with guns. She is of American origin and becomes a loyal friend to Goku and the others, even if her chaotic side often puts them in danger. Her disappearance from the main story reflects the series’ shift from light‑hearted gag comedy to high‑stakes action, leaving her as a memorable figure of the early Dragon Ball era.
