Description
Demon King Piccolo, also known as Piccolo Daimao, is a major antagonist from the original Dragon Ball anime. He is a Namekian who came into being as the physical manifestation of all the evil that was once contained within the being who would become Earth's guardian god, known simply as Kami. In order to become the pure-hearted guardian of the planet, this unnamed Namekian expelled his darkness, which then took on a life of its own as the Demon King. Centuries before the main story, Piccolo Daimao led a reign of terror across a more primitive Earth, unleashing his demon offspring to subjugate the human race. His destructive rule was eventually ended by the martial arts master Mutaito, who used a forbidden technique called the Evil Containment Wave to seal the demon king away inside a small rice cooker, which was then thrown into the sea.
Generations later, Demon King Piccolo was inadvertently released from his prison by the bumbling Emperor Pilaf, who was searching for the Dragon Balls. Upon his liberation, Piccolo appears as an aged but incredibly powerful creature, standing over seven feet tall with green skin, pointed ears, and sharp fangs, wearing a dark robe bearing the character for "demon". Despite his aged and withered physique, he is a terrifying force of pure malevolence. His personality is defined by cruelty, arrogance, and a complete lack of remorse. He commits heinous acts of destruction without a second thought, finding sadistic pleasure in the suffering of others. He is, however, intelligent and strategic, learning from past mistakes and possessing a deep-seated fear of the Evil Containment Wave that once imprisoned him, leading him to systematically hunt down and eliminate any martial artist who could potentially wield it.
Motivated by a desire to regain his youth and to plunge the world into eternal chaos, Piccolo Daimao seeks the Dragon Balls to wish for his vitality to be restored. Unlike a typical conqueror, he does not desire to rule the world in an orderly fashion; his true goal is to allow anarchy and terror to reign supreme, even creating a holiday where a city is destroyed each year. To accomplish his goals, he spawns several demonic sons from eggs he regurgitates, each tailored for a specific task. He creates Piano as his cunning strategist and right-hand man, Tambourine as a swift and deadly assassin who murders martial artists, Cymbal to hunt for the Dragon Balls, and later, after regaining his youth, Drum as a powerful brute. Despite his evil nature, he shows a twisted form of paternal affection, becoming enraged upon learning that his sons Tambourine and Cymbal have been killed.
In the story, Demon King Piccolo is directly responsible for some of the most pivotal and tragic moments. He murders Krillin and later Chiaotzu in cold blood, and he mortally wounds Master Roshi, who dies after failing to perform the Evil Containment Wave. After successfully using the Dragon Balls to restore his youth, his power increases dramatically, allowing him to overthrow the King of the World and take control of Earth. His reign of tyranny is finally challenged by a young Goku, who has been seeking revenge for his murdered friends. In a brutal and climactic battle, an aged King Piccolo severely beats Goku, but his youthful form is ultimately defeated when Goku, using the last of his strength, punches a hole clean through the Demon King's chest.
Facing certain death, Piccolo Daimao reveals his final, desperate plan. He concentrates all of his power, will, and memories into one last egg, which he spits into the mountains, creating a final son and reincarnation: Piccolo Jr.. With this act, Demon King Piccolo dies, ensuring that his legacy and his hatred for Goku will live on through his offspring. Among his notable abilities are superhuman strength, speed, and durability. He can fly using ki, extend his limbs, regenerate from injuries, and fire powerful energy beams from his hands or mouth. His signature techniques include the Explosive Demon Wave, a devastating blast capable of leveling an entire city, and the Eye Laser, a precise beam shot from his eyes.
