Description
Dr. Brief, also known as Dr. Briefs, is a foundational figure in the world of Dragon Ball, renowned as the founder and president of the global technology giant, Capsule Corporation. He is an elderly human male, typically depicted as short and stocky, with gray hair styled in a distinctive upward sweep, a large gray mustache, and large glasses. His standard attire is a white lab coat over a blue shirt and black pants, and he is almost always seen with a cigarette in his mouth. A notable constant companion is his beloved small black cat, named Tama (or Scratch in some English adaptations), which often perches on his shoulder.

In terms of personality, Dr. Brief is presented as a brilliant but eccentric and easy-going individual. Despite his immense wealth and status as one of the smartest and richest men on Earth, he prefers the comfort of his home and workshop at Capsule Corporation, rarely leaving its grounds. He is a man of simple, personal passions, including tinkering with gadgets, caring for his vast collection of pets, and nurturing his indoor greenhouse, which he has filled with an assortment of animals, including dinosaurs. He also has a somewhat irreverent and perverted side, as his hobby includes collecting adult magazines, a fact that has occasionally embarrassed his daughter, Bulma. A defining trait is his profound love for his animals; he and his wife famously refuse to evacuate to safety during the Majin Buu crisis because they will not abandon their pets, demonstrating a calm conviction that likely stems from his faith in the Dragon Balls to undo any tragedy.

Dr. Briefs primary motivation is never explicitly stated as a drive for adventure or combat, but rather a pure, unadulterated passion for scientific discovery and invention. His genius has had a monumental impact on the world, starting with his revolutionary invention of the Hoi-Poi Capsules, a technology that allows objects of any size to be shrunk and stored in small, portable capsules. This invention not only made him a fortune but fundamentally changed everyday life on Earth. In the story, his role is that of a crucial, behind-the-scenes supporter of the Z-Fighters, providing the technological solutions required for their intergalactic adventures and battles. While his direct involvement in the plot is minimal, his contributions are indispensable.

He is the father of Bulma and Tights, the father-in-law of Vegeta, and the grandfather of Trunks and Bulla. His genius for invention is clearly inherited by his daughter Bulma, who is also a brilliant scientist in her own right. His relationship with his family is warm and supportive, as seen when he happily provides them with a home and the resources of Capsule Corporation. His dynamic with his Saiyan son-in-law, Vegeta, is particularly notable; Dr. Brief casually builds the extreme 300x Earth's gravity training room that Vegeta demands, and later cares for him as part of the family, unfazed by the prince's intimidating demeanor.

Dr. Briefs impact on the series plot occurs through his engineering feats. After examining the small spherical spaceship that a young Goku arrived in, he successfully remodeled it into a larger, faster, and more comfortable vessel. This spaceship was crucial for Krillin, Gohan, and Bulma to travel to Planet Namek to find the Dragon Balls, and an improved version was later used by Goku himself, who completed the trip in only six days thanks to its built-in artificial gravity chamber for training. Following the Namek saga, he built the high-gravity room for Vegeta's use. During the Android Saga, he assisted his daughter in analyzing Dr. Gero's blueprints and performed the impressive technical feat of repairing the critically damaged Android 16, even removing the explosive device inside him.

Unlike many characters in Dragon Ball, Dr. Brief does not undergo significant personal development or change. He remains a constant, reliable genius inventor from his first appearance to his last. Regarding his fate, in the main timeline, he is killed along with most of Earth's population by Majin Buu, but is later revived with the Namekian Dragon Balls. He is last seen alive in Dragon Ball Super. However, in the animated series Dragon Ball GT, his grandson Trunks has taken over as president of Capsule Corporation, implying that Dr. Brief has either retired or passed away. In the bleak alternate future timeline, Future Bulma states that her father died sometime before the year Age 780. In the main timeline, he is generally accepted to have died of natural causes sometime after the events of Dragon Ball Super.
