TV-Series
Description
Mestre Karin, also known as Korin, is a wise and ancient cat who has lived for over eight hundred years at the summit of a towering pillar known as Korin Tower. He is a master of martial arts and serves as a gatekeeper between the mortal world and the divine realm, testing the worthiness of warriors who seek to reach the Lookout of Kami, the Earth's guardian. His design was inspired by the pet cat of the series' creator. Despite his small and unassuming feline appearance, he exudes an aura of great age and experience. His personality is characterized by calmness, keen observation, and an occasional streak of mischief. Unlike more flamboyant mentors, he maintains a professional and stoic demeanor, though he is not above using psychological tactics to push his students beyond their limits. He possesses a sharp ability to read a person's ki and character, allowing him to instantly see through deception or recognize hidden potential. Mestre Karin's primary motivation is to guide and test worthy martial artists, ensuring they have the discipline and pure heart necessary to advance toward higher spiritual training. He also serves as the sole cultivator of Senzu Beans, mystical legumes that can instantly heal injuries and restore energy, which he provides to the heroes in their most desperate battles. He plays a pivotal role in the original Dragon Ball series when a young Goku climbs his tower after a devastating defeat by the mercenary Taopaipai. In a famous training episode, Goku spends several days trying to take a bottle he believes contains the Super Holy Water, only to discover the water was ordinary and that the true power came from the effort of the training itself. Three centuries earlier, Mestre Karin had also trained a young Kamesennin, who took three full years to accomplish the same task. In Dragon Ball Z, his role shifts to a supporting capacity as the primary provider of Senzu Beans during the Saiyan, Namek, Android, and Majin Boo sagas. He also demonstrates the ability to sense energy across vast distances. His key relationships include Goku, whom he nurtures as a student; Yajirobe, who becomes his unlikely companion and assistant in cultivating Senzu Beans; and Kamesennin, who was his student long before. Over the course of the series, Mestre Karin transitions from an active trainer to a steady, watchful provider of essential resources, embodying the values of discipline, patience, and spiritual cultivation. Among his notable abilities are martial arts mastery, ki sensing, the technique of the Afterimage, and the cultivation of Senzu Beans. He also once possessed the Ultra Divine Water, a dangerous substance that could unlock a warrior's hidden potential but was lethal to those without the inner strength to survive its effects.
