Piccolo Daimaoh, also known as the Great Demon King Piccolo, is a character from the Dragon Ball story. He is the evil half of a Namekian being who arrived on Earth centuries before the events of the series. When this Namekian sought to become the guardian of Earth, later known as Kami, he expelled all the evil within himself, and that concentrated darkness took on a separate physical existence as Piccolo Daimaoh. Because the two halves originate from the same being, their lives are linked; if one perishes, the other dies as well. Around three hundred years before the series begins, Piccolo Daimaoh plunged the world into chaos and terror. He was eventually defeated and sealed inside a container by the martial arts master Mutaito, who used a technique called the Mafuba, the Evil Containment Wave. Decades later, he is accidentally freed by Emperor Pilaf and his followers, who believed they could use his power to conquer the world, only to realize they had unleashed a threat far greater than they imagined.

In appearance, Piccolo Daimaoh is a towering Namekian with green skin, long pointed antennae, sharp eyes, a horned white headpiece, and a muscular build. Standing well over two meters tall, he dwarfs most of his opponents. His dark robes, cape, and regal bearing reflect his self-image as a king of demons. When first released from his seal he appears old and diminished, but after restoring his youth through the Dragon Balls, he becomes larger, more powerful, and far more intimidating.

In personality, Piccolo Daimaoh is the embodiment of pure evil. He is cruel, arrogant, and tyrannical, regarding human beings as inferior creatures beneath his notice. He takes genuine pleasure in spreading fear and suffering, and his central ambition is to conquer the world and rule it through terror. He is also cunning and strategic, preferring to work through his demon offspring and manipulate events from the shadows rather than confront every enemy directly. He is deeply vindictive toward anyone who defies him, and his immense pride leads him to believe he is nearly invincible, a confidence that ultimately contributes to his downfall. He is obsessed with youth and power, which drives him to seek out the Dragon Balls and return himself to his prime.

His motivations center on domination and destruction. Viewing the world's martial artists as potential future threats, he begins eliminating them systematically after his release, creating demon children to carry out his orders. Among these offspring are Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum, and Piano, all of whom are named after musical instruments, continuing the pattern of Piccolo's own name. Tambourine is responsible for one of the most significant acts of violence in the story: the killing of Goku's friend Krillin. This event marks a shift in the narrative from lighthearted adventure into serious and dangerous territory. Piccolo Daimaoh also defeats several experienced fighters with little effort, including Master Roshi and Chiaotzu, demonstrating that his power far surpasses that of the human warriors of the era.

His role in the story is that of the first major villain capable of threatening the entire world. After regaining his freedom, he seizes control through force, using his minions to spread destruction. He forces the world's ruler to gather the Dragon Balls, wishes to recover his youth, and then destroys the dragon Shenlong in front of witnesses, seemingly ending the possibility of reviving anyone he has killed. He then attempts to establish a reign of terror across the planet. Goku, after drinking the Ultra Divine Water and completing his training, confronts him in a brutal final battle. Even at full power, Piccolo Daimaoh is ultimately defeated when Goku drives a punch through his body. Mortally wounded, the Demon King acknowledges his defeat and, before dying, spits out a final egg containing his last offspring and reincarnation, Piccolo Jr., who is destined to carry on his hatred of Goku and his ambition to rule the world.

Several key relationships define the character. With Kami, he shares an inescapable bond as the other half of a once-whole being, meaning the survival of one depends on the survival of the other. With Goku, he is the first enemy powerful enough to force Goku to mature, and their conflict ends with Goku's first kill. With his demon offspring, he acts as a creator and father figure, using them as instruments of his will rather than as equals. With the martial arts masters of Earth, he is a feared adversary who easily overcomes them, as seen when he crushes those who attempt to seal him away with the Mafuba once more.

He can fire devastating energy attacks, including his notable Explosive Demon Wave, which is capable of leveling entire cities. As a Namekian, he has access to mystical powers, including telepathy and regeneration, allowing him to recover from severe injuries as long as his head remains intact. He can also create new life from his own body, producing demon offspring from eggs, each with its own specialized abilities and unwavering loyalty to him.
