Description
Nene Romanova is the youngest member of the Knight Sabers, the vigilante group that fights the rogue Boomers and the Genom corporation in MegaTokyo. Born to well-off but overly strict and controlling parents, Nene ran away from home to escape their dictatorial oversight. She was too intelligent for her classes, often cutting school out of boredom, and found an outlet in the digital realm where she honed her programming and hacking skills to a razor edge. To secure a job at the AD Police, she hacked her official records to inflate her age. She works as a data entry clerk at AD Police headquarters, a position that doubles as a mole for the Knight Sabers, allowing her to funnel sensitive information to the team. She was recruited by Sylia Stingray after successfully decrypting a heavily encrypted help-wanted ad that Sylia had posted across the Net.

Nene’s personality is marked by a bubbly, naive, and open demeanor. She is intelligent and resourceful but often silly and innocent, sometimes to the frustration of her teammates. She has a romanticized view of the Knight Sabers’ work, believing that people need help, and she is in the team not out of a personal vendetta or emotional need but for the sheer challenge and the opportunity to test her skills in ways that school never could. Deep down, she desperately wants to be accepted as an equal by her fellow Knight Sabers. She has a fondness for candy and junk food, and her lack of physical exercise and conditioning makes her the least durable of the group.

Nene’s primary motivation is the thrill of adventure and the desire to prove herself. Unlike the other members, she was not driven by revenge or tragedy; her parents are alive and healthy. Instead, she joined the Knight Sabers for the chance to apply her exceptional intellect in high-stakes situations and to be part of something meaningful. She respects the AD Police, which puts her at odds with Priss, who harbors a deep distrust of law enforcement.

In the story, Nene functions as the technical conductor and communications expert of the Knight Sabers. She handles electronic warfare, intelligence gathering, and information support. As a master hacker, she can breach even the most secure systems with ease. Her role as a mole inside the AD Police gives the Knight Sabers access to sensitive files and ongoing investigations. In combat, she is the least skilled of the team; she lacks the physical strength, grace, and combat proficiency of Priss or Linna. Her hardsuit is designed for support rather than direct confrontation, equipped with radar, radio communication, sensor neutralization, and a weak laser gun that she often uses to scribble the Knight Sabers’ signature at the scenes of their actions. In later appearances, she receives an upgraded suit that adds an electromagnetic pulse striker and the ability to physically hack into a Boomer’s computer brain.

Key relationships include her interactions with her teammates. Priss and Linna frequently tease her for her lack of physical durability and her naive outlook, but Nene remains loyal and eager to help. She holds a great deal of respect for Sylia, who recruited her and gave her a purpose. Her work with the AD Police also brings her into contact with officers Leon McNichol and Daley Wong, though she maintains her double agent status with discretion.

Nene experiences some development across the series. In the sequel Bubblegum Crash, the Knight Sabers have disbanded, and Nene is the one who tries to keep the team’s spirit alive. When Sylia eventually reassembles the group, Nene embraces her role once more. Her technical capabilities grow with each iteration of her hardsuit, and she becomes more adept at using her wits and gadgets to compensate for her physical shortcomings. Overall, Nene is defined by her brilliance, her youthful enthusiasm, and her unwavering belief in doing good, even when her methods are unorthodox.
