Description
Hideki Motosuwa is an eighteen-year-old young man in the anime and a nineteen-year-old in the original manga. He was born on September 3rd and stands approximately 185 centimeters tall. Having grown up in the countryside, likely on a farm in Hokkaido, he moves to a bustling city like Tokyo after failing his university entrance exams. This makes him a ronin, a student who spends a year or more studying at a cram school to prepare for retaking the exams. His parents have cut off his allowance to encourage his studies, forcing him to work part-time at a restaurant called Yorokonde to afford his modest apartment and daily expenses.

Hideki's personality is defined by his genuine kindness and honesty, often putting the well-being of others before his own. He is a hardworking and earnest individual, though his efforts at studying frequently result in failure due to his nervousness during exams. As a newcomer to the big city, he is awkward and easily flustered, prone to outbursts of confusion and frustration. A notable quirk is his habit of thinking out loud and talking to himself, a remnant of his solitary upbringing on the farm. He is also quite timid and easily excited, struggling to keep his active libido in check, which is most famously demonstrated by his collection of pornographic magazines he refers to as his okazu or side dish. Despite his tendency to be dramatic and sometimes crude, he is a deeply caring and dependable person who others instinctively trust and turn to for advice.

His primary motivation and the central focus of his story begin when he discovers a beautiful, deactivated persocom, a type of personal computer in a humanoid form, abandoned in a pile of trash. Due to his limited funds and his desire for a persocom to access the internet, he takes her home and activates her. Her only spoken word is "Chii," so he adopts that as her name. At first, Hideki simply wants to care for her and teach her about the world, but he soon finds his life changed completely as he develops complicated feelings for her. This forces him to confront a profound question: whether it is possible for a human to truly love a persocom.

Hideki's role in the story is that of the protagonist, whose personal journey explores the nature of love, humanity, and relationships with technology. He serves as a foil to the technologically advanced society around him, as he has little to no experience with persocoms and is not particularly tech-savvy. Throughout the narrative, he forms several key relationships. His best friend is Hiromu Shinbo, a fellow cram school student who often helps him with technological issues related to Chii. He also relies on the landlady of his apartment, Chitose Hibiya, who secretly has a much larger role in Chii's creation and fate. His feelings are further complicated by his interactions with Yumi Omura, a human co-worker he initially considers a more appropriate love interest than a persocom.

Over the course of the series, Hideki undergoes significant development. Initially, he denies his romantic feelings for Chii, rationalizing that she is just a machine and that relationships between humans and persocoms are doomed, as he has heard stories of them ending badly. He treats Chii with respect and allows her independence, partly out of kindness but also as a way to maintain an emotional distance. However, his protective instincts repeatedly overcome his logical reservations, such as when he desperately searches for her after she is kidnapped. Ultimately, his journey leads him to accept that his love for Chii is genuine and transcends her nature as a computer, culminating in him choosing to value their unique bond over physical desires.

Hideki possesses no superhuman or technological abilities. His most notable strengths are entirely character-based: his boundless compassion, his determination to help his friends even at personal risk, and his earnest, romantic belief that love prevails regardless of the circumstances. He can be impulsive and act without thinking, such as jumping into water to save someone despite not knowing how to swim, but this recklessness is always in service of his caring nature. His ultimate triumph is not a physical one but an emotional one, as he succeeds in loving Chii for who she is, finding the answer to the question that has plagued him and the core mystery of the story.
