TV-Series
Description
Aji is the elderly landlady of the building that houses Kinme Cleaning, the laundry service run by the protagonist, Wakana Kinme, in the seaside town of Atami. She is a recurring figure in the community and sometimes a customer of the shop, having known the previous tenant of the building also ran a dry cleaning service. Aji was instrumental in helping Wakana establish her business, as she rented the previously vacant property to her.
Aji is depicted as having a somewhat stubborn and set-in-her-ways personality, particularly in her interactions as a customer. She is accustomed to the routines of her local cleaner and can be resistant to standard procedures, such as when she initially argued with Wakana about the need for a careful check-in of her garments, claiming they were just her regular laundry. Despite this gruff exterior, her actions reveal a deeply caring and supportive side. It is revealed that when Wakana first opened her shop two years prior to the main events of the story, Aji provided her with valuable advice that helped her build a customer base during a stressful and uncertain period. This guidance directly inspired the shop's motto, Local Cleaning with a Heart.
Aji's role in the story extends beyond that of a landlord and mentor; she is also a person for whom Wakana's unique professional dedication becomes a matter of personal significance. In a pivotal episode, Wakana noticed a troubling, recurring stain on a specific area of Aji's clothing. When Wakana gently inquired about it, the older woman became offended and left the shop abruptly. However, when Wakana later went to Aji's house to deliver the monthly rent, she found her collapsed from a medical emergency. The stain Wakana had observed was a symptom of the condition that caused the incident, and Wakana's concern and timely arrival allowed her to get help. Through this event, Aji learns that her previous tenant, the shop's former owner, had also once saved someone's life by discovering troubling stains on their clothing. This deepens the connection between the landlady and the protagonist, solidifying their relationship beyond a simple tenant-landlord arrangement. Aji's past support was crucial to Wakana's present, and in turn, Wakana's professional vigilance proved crucial to Aji's well-being.
