Description
Kei Shirogane is the younger sister of Miyuki Shirogane, the student council president at Shuchiin Academy. A 14-year-old second-year student in the middle school division, Kei holds the position of treasurer for the middle school student council and is known among her peers for her striking appearance, characterized by her long white hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion, which she often accents with a lace or pearl-adorned headband.

Kei shares many of her brother's core traits, including a serious disposition, a strong sense of responsibility, and a marked frugality born from the Shirogane family's modest financial circumstances. This economic mindset is so ingrained that she quantifies potential purchases by calculating how many newspaper deliveries would be required to pay for them, highlighting her practical and hardworking nature. Outside the home, she is perceived as calm, composed, and reliable, which contributes to her considerable popularity with both male and female classmates. However, her home demeanor is quite different; she is in a rebellious phase and often responds to her brother's overprotective nagging with sharp words and a cold attitude, though this is a facade that masks deep-seated pride and affection for him.

The complexity of Kei's character is rooted in her family's past. Following her parents' separation, her mother initially took only Kei because she had passed a kindergarten entrance exam while Miyuki had not. Kei eventually returned to live with her father and brother, a decision she describes as having run away from her mother rather than having come back home. This troubled history has forged a strong, if often unspoken, bond between the siblings and has made Kei a pragmatic contributor to the household, as she works a part-time job delivering newspapers and turns over all her earnings to help support the family budget.

Her key relationships further define her role in the story. Despite her outward rebelliousness, Kei is deeply interested in her brother's love life, secretly monitoring his interactions with the student council vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya. Kei greatly admires Kaguya, feeling a nervousness around her that stems from genuine affection and a desire to become closer friends. She is so fond of the idea that she eventually becomes an eager supporter of a romantic relationship between Miyuki and Kaguya, viewing Kaguya as an ideal sister-in-law. She also shares a close friendship with Moeha Fujiwara, the younger sister of Miyuki's fellow council member Chika Fujiwara, and she affectionately calls Chika "Chika-nee," indicating a warm, sisterly bond with the Fujiwara family.

As the story progresses, Kei's outward coldness gives way to more obvious displays of care. Her rebellious phase softens, and she and her brother increasingly find themselves united as the "straight men" reacting to their eccentric father's antics. Upon discovering the truth about Miyuki and Kaguya's relationship, her interest turns into enthusiastic support, though she is not without moments of jealousy, occasionally wanting Kaguya's attention for herself. Her notable abilities include a sharp acumen for managing finances and a talent for delivering blunt, honest assessments, often cutting through the elaborate romantic mind games of the main characters with her straightforward practicality.
