Description
Monika Kaniyashiki, also known by the alias Kaniko, is a character who appears in the spin‑off series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. She is a member of the police force in Osaka who goes undercover as an idol for the Kanidoge restaurant chain in order to investigate the smuggling and distribution of the illegal drug Trigger. Her role is most prominent during the Osaka Incident Arc, where she works alongside Pro Hero Fat Gum and detective Naomasa Tsukauchi.

Monika is physically small and petite, with a round face and semicircular eyes that are typically depicted with orange‑brown or white irises. Her hair is styled in a distinctive way that resembles a crab: two high bunches with claw‑shaped ends, six short tufts protruding from the sides, and split bangs that hang over each eye. Her general appearance often incorporates crab motifs, which reflect her fondness for crab‑themed puns and her energetic, eccentric personality.

She comes across as cheerful, boisterous, and almost goofy, frequently making crab‑based jokes and adopting a lively, animated demeanor while in her undercover idol persona. Despite this outward playfulness, Monika takes her duties as a police officer very seriously. She possesses sharp deductive and investigative skills, and she does not hesitate to put herself in harm’s way to protect innocent people, even if using her Quirk in public could compromise her cover or cause trouble for her as an officer of the law.

Her Quirk, referred to as Snip Clip or simply Scissors, grants her the ability to cut through almost any material that is placed between her index and middle fingers by making a snipping motion. She can also extend this ability to cut objects placed between her legs, allowing her to handle larger targets. The cutting force is powerful enough to slice through solid steel, such as the limbs of industrial exoskeletons. This Quirk makes her a formidable close‑quarters combatant and an effective asset in field operations.

Monika’s key relationships include her partnership with Fat Gum, with whom she coordinates during the investigation into the Trigger smuggling ring. She also interacts with the main protagonists of Vigilantes: Koichi Haimawari (The Crawler) and Pop Step, whom she initially views with suspicion because of their vigilante activities. Additionally, she works under the supervision of Naomasa Tsukauchi and is respected by her colleagues for her competence.

Within the story, Monika serves as a supporting character who helps advance the plot of the Osaka arc by providing intelligence, direct intervention, and comic relief. Her combination of bubbly idol behaviour and sharp police instincts creates a contrast that highlights her depth. While the narrative does not delve deeply into a lengthy personal backstory, it establishes her as a dedicated and brave officer who is willing to risk her safety and reputation to uphold justice. Her development is tied to her growing trust in the vigilantes and her willingness to collaborate with them for the greater good.
