Description
As a Pro Hero, the English teacher at U.A. High School, and a popular radio personality, Hizashi Yamada, known as the Voice Hero Present Mic, is a character defined by his overwhelming energy and sonic power. His public persona is that of a flamboyant and high-spirited entertainer, treating all interactions like a live show and calling those around him his listeners, a habit that stems from his work as a DJ on his late-night radio program, "Put Your Hands Up Radio". Despite his loud and often comedic exterior, he is fundamentally straightforward, loyal, and deeply caring, especially towards his close friends and students. Underneath the exuberance lies a more sensitive and serious individual, capable of intense rage and profound grief when those he cares about are threatened or lost.
Born on July 7, Hizashi stands tall and slim at 185cm, with distinctive spiky blond hair, a small mustache, and rectangular eyes with unusual concentric pupils. His hero costume reflects his rock-and-roll DJ aesthetic, consisting of a studded black leather jacket, orange-tinted sunglasses, and large headphones branded with the word "HAGE". The most crucial part of his equipment is the large directional speaker system worn around his neck, which allows him to channel and focus his Quirk with precision. His Quirk, simply named Voice, grants him the ability to generate destructive sound waves capable of shattering materials, rupturing eardrums, and delivering powerful shockwaves over a wide area. This power manifested explosively at birth, injuring the attending medical staff and his own parents. To mitigate its overwhelming nature, he relies on his speaker equipment; a notable weakness is that his Quirk is less effective underground or through thick layers of earth.
The prequel series Vigilantes explores his crucial backstory during his own time as a student at U.A. High School. There, he was a classmate and close friend of Shota Aizawa and the bright and cheerful Oboro Shirakumo. The three formed a tight-knit trio, with Hizashi and Shirakumo often working to draw the introverted and insecure Aizawa out of his shell. This period was instrumental in shaping the hero he would become. It was Hizashi who came up with Aizawa's hero name, Eraser Head. Their idyllic school days came to a tragic end during a battle in their second year. A villain used Hizashi’s own Quirk against him, redirecting his Voice to collapse a building on Shirakumo, who was killed in the incident. This event left a deep and permanent scar on both surviving friends, burdening Hizashi with a form of survivor's guilt as his power had been the indirect instrument of his friend's death.
This shared trauma is the bedrock of his most important relationship. His dynamic with Shota Aizawa is one of the most profound in the series; their near-opposite personalities create a perfect balance, with Hizashi's loud exuberance complementing Aizawa's quiet stoicism. In the wake of Shirakumo's death, while Aizawa became more withdrawn, Hizashi coped by immersing himself in his multiple careers as a hero, teacher, and DJ. However, he never stopped quietly watching over his friend from the sidelines, offering support without being overbearing. This loyalty is put to its most devastating test when the two later discover that the villainous entity Kurogiri is, in fact, a Nomu created from the corpse of their deceased friend. This revelation ignites a fiery rage in the usually jovial Present Mic, who joins Aizawa in confronting the truth and seeking a way to reach the lingering fragments of Shirakumo's personality trapped within the monster, demonstrating that beneath the performer is a heart capable of withstanding immense pain for the sake of a friend.
Throughout the events of Vigilantes, his role serves to illuminate the history of the hero system and provide context for Aizawa's later character. He is shown as already being a capable and recognizable hero during this earlier time, balancing field work with his budding career in media. While he is a dedicated and skilled educator, he is also a formidable combatant. His fighting style revolves around long-range sound projection and battlefield control, using moves like Loud Voice to suppress enemies or clear areas. Beyond his sonic abilities, he possesses keen intelligence and strong deductive skills, being one of the first to suspect the existence of a traitor within U.A. His personality also has notable vulnerabilities, most prominently a severe phobia of insects that causes him to panic or faint, which leads him to strongly prefer urban environments over forests.
