Description
Lucy Steel, born Lucy Pendleton, is the wife of Steven Steel, the promoter of the Steel Ball Run cross‑country horse race. She is a fourteen‑year‑old girl of average height and build, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her backstory is that her parents died, leaving her vulnerable, and Steven Steel married her partly to protect her from men who wanted to exploit her. She also inspired the original concept for the race, and Steven took the idea from her. Despite the large age gap, she provides him with emotional support and bears a striking resemblance to his first love.

Lucy possesses a strong sense of loyalty and courage. Her primary motivation is to protect her husband, Steven. When she discovers that President Funny Valentine has engineered the race as a front to collect the scattered pieces of the Holy Corpse, and that Valentine plans to kill Steven to secure his secrets, she decides to act. She is initially an ordinary young woman without any Stand ability, relying on her quick thinking, resourcefulness, and deceptive skills.

Her role in the story evolves from a passive observer into a central figure in the conflict against Valentine. She chooses to cooperate with Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, passing them information about Valentine’s moves. She infiltrates Valentine’s inner circle by disguising herself as the president’s wife, Scarlet Valentine, with the help of the racer Hot Pants. This allows her to steal pieces of the Holy Corpse and sabotage Valentine’s plan from within. Later, the Holy Corpse chooses her as its vessel, and the head of the corpse merges with her body, dramatically altering her role and making her the direct target of both Valentine and his other enemies.

Her key relationships include her husband Steven Steel, whom she fiercely loves and protects; the allies Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, who trust her as a spy and help her in return; and Hot Pants, who assists her directly. Her main adversaries are Funny Valentine and his wife Scarlet Valentine, as well as the alternate‑world Diego Brando who appears near the story’s climax.

Her development is marked by her growing bravery and agency. She starts as a frightened but determined girl and matures into someone who can face the president himself. She uses the natural properties of the Holy Corpse to activate a Stand ability called Ticket to Ride, which manifests as tear‑shaped blades that can cut opponents and bring continuous calamity to the area she strikes. She also demonstrates strategic intelligence by using Valentine’s own Stand mechanic—the rule that alternate‑world versions of the same person merge and vanish on contact—to defeat the alternate Diego Brando, forcing him to touch the severed head of the original Diego.

After the race, she safely locks the Holy Corpse in a vault. Decades later, in the story’s eighth part, JoJolion, she is shown as an elderly widow working for the Speedwagon Foundation, investigating the mysterious plant Rokakaka. She dies of lung disease a few years after that investigation. Lucy Steel remains one of the most important non‑combatant characters in Steel Ball Run, whose determination and sacrifice directly shape the story’s outcome.
