Description
Qin Shi Huang, whose real name is Ying Zheng, is introduced in Record of Ragnarok III as one of humanity's chosen fighters. He is portrayed as the first emperor of China, the ruler who brought an end to the chaotic Spring and Autumn and Warring States period and unified a vast territory for the first time in human history, earning him the title King of All Beginnings. His origins were difficult: he was born in 259 BCE as the son of a high-ranking Qin noble held hostage in the enemy state of Zhao, and at the age of two he was abandoned by both parents. He grew up surrounded by people who despised him because of the mass killings carried out by Qin forces at the Battle of Changping before his birth. From a young age he also suffered from a condition called mirror-touch synesthesia, which caused him to physically experience the pain and injuries of others as wounds on his own body. His only source of care came from Chun Yan, a woman who initially resented him due to her own losses in that war. Over time she became an adoptive mother figure, giving him the blindfold that helped him endure his condition and teaching him human warmth. When she sacrificed herself to protect him from an assassination attempt, her dying wish was that he become the greatest king of all. That promise shaped his entire life. At the age of twelve he ascended the throne after the deaths of the Qin king and crown prince, and he later conquered the six rival kingdoms, defeated the demon god Chiyou, and founded the Qin dynasty as its first emperor.
In personality, Qin Shi Huang is confident, authoritative, and utterly unshakable in his belief in himself. He carries himself with the calm dignity of a ruler and speaks of himself as one who is destined to reign over all under heaven. Although his bearing can seem arrogant, his worldview is rooted in responsibility rather than mere pride. He believes that a true king must stand at the front, bear the suffering of the people, and never depend on others or bow to pressure. He genuinely cares for those under his protection and treats the burdens of leadership as his own to carry. He is also able to recognize and respect genuine greatness in others, including his enemies, which is most clearly shown in his attitude toward Hades, the king of the underworld, whom he comes to honor as a fellow true king.
His role in the story is to represent humanity in the seventh round of Ragnarok, where he faces Hades in a confrontation framed as a battle between two kings. He wins this fight, proving that his ideal of kingship can stand even against a god of Hades' standing. His key relationships reflect different aspects of his character. Alvitr, the Valkyrie who becomes his partner, performs the Völundr technique to transform herself into his divine weapons: first the spaulders, a defensive armament suited to his fighting style, and later the Goujian sword, an offensive form. Their partnership is built on shared resolve and trust rather than force alone. Chun Yan remains the emotional foundation of his life, and the blindfold she gave him stays with him as a reminder of her wish. His relationship with the demon god Chiyou is also significant, because after defeating him he names his own martial art after his fallen opponent as a mark of respect. His biological parents, by contrast, are shown as figures who never truly loved him, deepening the loneliness of his early years.
In terms of development, Qin Shi Huang grows from a cursed and abandoned child into the greatest king his people had ever known. His suffering did not harden him into cruelty but instead shaped his conviction that a king exists to absorb hardship on behalf of others. Where others might have been broken by his condition, he turned his ability to feel pain into a tool for understanding both people and combat. Throughout his fight with Hades, he remains true to this philosophy, enduring terrible damage without ever losing his composure, and his victory represents the fulfillment of the promise he made to Chun Yan.
His notable abilities make him one of the most formidable human fighters in the series. He possesses godlike physical strength, capable of destroying walls, throwing the god Ares with one hand, and overpowering Hades in close combat. His speed, reflexes, and durability allow him to keep pace with divine opponents, while his willpower lets him fight on even while experiencing the suffering of others. Because of his mirror-touch synesthesia, he developed the ability to see the flow of chi, or life force, within living beings when he removes his blindfold. With his star eyes, he can identify the critical points along these flows and strike them to disrupt an opponent's power. He is also the founder of his own martial art, Chi You, which consists of five distinct fighting styles named after Chiyou. These include the armor style, which can intercept and absorb an enemy's power and redirect it; the spear style, which lets him pierce an opponent's body with a dragon-claw strike; the halberd style, which uses his legs like a whipping weapon; the crossbow style, which releases concentrated air to weaken enemy attacks and break their defenses; and the sword style, which he unleashes at full power with the divine Goujian sword. His only notable constraints are that wearing the blindfold limits his vision, and that if his divine weapon is destroyed, his Valkyrie partner Alvitr will die alongside it.
