Movie
Description
Kanade Hisaishi is a first-year student who joins the Kitauji High School concert band as a euphonium player in the events of Sound! Euphonium: The Movie - Our Promise: A Brand New Day. She is a short girl with fair skin, distinctive cherry-red eyes, and black hair styled in a bob with straight bangs, accented by a small red ribbon on the left side. Born on January 7th, she stands approximately 153 centimeters tall.

At first glance, Kanade presents herself as the ideal junior. She is courteous, possesses excellent communication skills, and makes a strong positive impression on both her peers and senior members of the band. This polished exterior, however, conceals a more calculating and guarded interior. Her mentor, Kumiko Oumae, famously describes this duality as a superficial politeness that can seem rude in its intent. Behind her friendly smile, Kanade has a mischievous and even provocative side, often wielding irony and veiled barbs to test those around her. This is most clearly seen in her interactions with her classmate Motomu Tsukinaga, whom she deliberately teases by using his disliked family name.

The core of Kanade’s personality is shaped by a traumatic experience in middle school. Despite being a talented euphonium player who practiced efficiently, she was overlooked for a competition in favor of a less skilled but more visibly hardworking senior. When the band only won a silver medal, she was blamed for displacing the senior, leading to a deep-seated fear of creating enemies and being resented by others for her talent. This past drives her actions at Kitauji, making her hyper-aware of social dynamics and the unspoken hierarchies within the group.

Consequently, her motivations in the film are colored by a need for self-preservation. Rather than risk standing out and incurring the displeasure of her seniors, she initially considers sacrificing her own ambitions. This is most evident during the crucial auditions to select members for the regional competition. After realizing that her performance level could potentially push the third-year senior Natsuki Nakagawa out of a spot, Kanade deliberately plays poorly to sabotage her own chances. She later confesses that her mistake was not an accident but a calculated decision to protect herself from the hatred and gossip she had experienced in the past. It is only after a heartfelt confrontation with Kumiko and Natsuki, who assure her that the club culture at Kitauji is different and that she should be true to her abilities, that she agrees to perform honestly and earns her place in the competition.

Kanade’s role in the story is that of a complex catalyst and a direct challenge for Kumiko, who is now a second-year student responsible for mentoring the new members. Her primary relationship is with Kumiko, who sees a reflection of her own past struggles in Kanade and becomes a trusted senpai. While Kanade respects Kumiko’s musicianship and often seeks her advice, she also tests her and questions her decisions, such as when she challenges the fairness of Reina Kousaka being chosen as the trumpet soloist. Her relationship with Natsuki evolves from one of wary distance, born from a fear of overshadowing her, to a more honest and respectful dynamic after their emotional confrontation. She also shows empathy for fellow first-year Mirei Suzuki, understanding the other girl’s feelings of isolation and projecting her own past wounds onto a talented yet struggling peer.

In terms of musical ability, Kanade is an experienced and highly skilled euphonium player, having played the instrument for three years in middle school. Her technical proficiency allows her to quickly master difficult passages and secure a spot in the main "A" section for the competition once she decides to play seriously. She plays on a golden euphonium, the same model as Kumiko’s school-provided instrument. Beyond her musical talent, her notable abilities lie in her sharp social intuition and her skill at gathering information, which she uses to navigate the complex interpersonal landscape of the concert band. Her hobbies include watching dramatic plays and taking selfies, and she has a stated preference for apple shapes, strawberry flavors, and clumsy people, while disliking squid and those who unconsciously take others’ pampering for granted.
