Description
Kaho Hariya is a first-year student at Kitauji High School who joins the school's concert band, making her two years younger than the series' central protagonist, Kumiko Oumae. She is a girl of short stature, standing at 152 cm, with a distinctive appearance that includes a short, dark brown bob haircut with straight bangs and light freckles on her cheeks. Her eyes are characterized as single-lidded and gently sloping, giving her a soft and calm expression that has been affectionately compared to a lucky cat or an alpaca.

In terms of personality, Kaho is gentle, reserved, and somewhat dreamy, often described as having her head in the clouds. She tends to be shy and cautious in her words and actions, usually listening to conversations with a warm smile rather than speaking up herself. Despite her quiet nature, she is very easy to amuse and has a low threshold for laughter, easily finding joy in simple jokes and wordplay from her close friends, which makes her laugh contagious. She cherishes a pleasant and cheerful atmosphere and becomes uncomfortable with tension or unpleasant situations. Kaho is an only child, which leads her to sometimes envy classmates who have siblings, playfully wishing for the small squabbles over snacks that come with them.

Before high school, Kaho was a member of her middle school's manga club, where she developed a love for drawing and a special skill for creating flipbooks. She joins the Kitauji concert band not from a deep musical background, but because she wants to continue the experience with her three close childhood friends: Sari Yoshii, Suzume Kamaya, and Yayoi Kamiishi. This quartet has been together since kindergarten, and they all enter the band as a group. While her friends are assigned to other instruments, Kaho is given the euphonium to play, an instrument she has no prior experience with beyond basic recorders and melodicas from elementary school.

Within the story, Kaho represents the new wave of first-year students entering the band during Kumiko Oumae's third and final year. Her role is that of a dedicated beginner who faces the challenges of learning an instrument from scratch in a highly competitive ensemble. She struggles initially with basic techniques like reading music, fingering, and lip slurs, and she finds the simultaneous marching and playing required for the Sunrise Festival parade particularly difficult, leading to corrections from the strict Reina Kousaka. However, her journey is defined by perseverance and growth. Through consistent practice and the patient guidance of older students, especially the gentle instruction of the third-year euphonium player Mayu Kuroe, she improves rapidly. Her progress is significant enough that the sharp-tongued second-year Kanade Hisaishi comments that within a few months, Kaho is already playing at the level of a former third-year student, Natsuki Nakagawa.

Kaho's key relationships are central to her experience. Her strongest bonds are with her childhood friends: Sari, whom she calls "Sally" and who often gives her advice and emotional support, and Suzume and Yayoi, with whom she shares laughter and mutual encouragement. She holds deep respect for her upperclassmen in the euphonium section. She views the band president Kumiko Oumae as a charismatic and somewhat distant leader who she admires greatly but feels shy around. She has a more relaxed and grateful relationship with Mayu Kuroe, whose kind words and one-on-one teaching help build her confidence. In contrast, she is slightly intimidated by the sharp intelligence of Kanade Hisaishi, who enjoys playfully teasing her, leading to awkward but comedic situations.

Kaho's personal development is one of building self-assurance through the support of her community. She begins as an insecure newcomer, brought to tears by the pressure and her own feelings of inadequacy. However, through the unwavering encouragement of her friends and the invested mentorship of her seniors, she transforms her initial struggles into a source of pride. Her abilities as a euphonium player advance from absolute beginner to a level that surprises even the more experienced band members, proving that her dedication and the positive environment of Kitauji's band allow her to flourish. She plays a silver YAMAHA YEP-321 model euphonium, an instrument previously used by the graduated senior Natsuki Nakagawa.
