Description
Hotaruko Kanuma is a fictional character from the anime Digimon Beatbreak. She is an eighteen-year-old female character with a reported height of one hundred sixty-five centimeters and a blood type A, born on July 2nd. Her name, Hotaruko, has a thematic connection to the mineral fluorite, which is called hotaruishi in Japanese and is often pink, reflecting her pink hair and electronic pulse color scheme.

Hotaruko is a member of Tactics Team Seven, a group of operatives known as Cleaners who work under Klay Arslan, one of the Five Stars known as the Star of Earth. Her partner Digimon is Syakomon, which hatched from an abnormal electronic pulse caused by her own severe lack of sleep from overwork. The birth of her Digimon caused significant damage to the research laboratory where she was working as an intern. This accident led to the loss of her internship, her expulsion from college, and the accumulation of a substantial debt. To pay off this debt, Hotaruko was forced to join the Tactics organization, trading her previous academic and career aspirations for a life as a field operative.

Personality wise, Hotaruko is characterized as serious, hardworking, and deeply compassionate, though she often masks her softer side with a pragmatic and sometimes abrasive exterior. She is known for having a deadpan expression, often appearing unimpressed or stern, especially in contrast to more flamboyant personalities. Despite her tough circumstances, she is principled. For instance, she was the only member of her team opposed to the tactic of using young children as bait to achieve their objectives. In another instance, she directly disobeyed an order from her superior, Seraphy Naito, to kill another operative, demonstrating a strong moral line she will not cross.

Her primary motivation is financial stability and the well-being of her family. Hotaruko comes from a household where her father has passed away, leaving her mother to raise three children while running an okonomiyaki restaurant. As the eldest daughter, Hotaruko feels the immense pressure to support her family, which is why she endures the dangerous and unethical work of a Cleaner. However, she hides her true job from her family, lying to them to prevent them from worrying or becoming associated with the risks that come with Cleaners.

In the story, Hotaruko serves as a foil to other characters, particularly Makoto. While both became Cleaners after their Digimon caused them to lose everything, their attitudes are opposites. Makoto is portrayed as passive and soft-hearted, lacking clear goals after his fall from a privileged life. This infuriates Hotaruko, who has lost her promising academic and research career and now works a terrible job with little pay and stern bosses just to survive. She feels a deep antipathy toward him because he seems to waste his potential and shows no motivation, while she is sacrificing everything to make ends meet for her family. She believes in taking matters into one's own hands and cannot tolerate what she perceives as weakness or lack of drive. Conversely, she shows a more supportive side to her teammate Raito Souda, offering him a simple truth during his self-loathing—that regardless of his perceived inadequacies, his partner Digimon, Ketomon, will remain with him.

Throughout the series, Hotaruko experiences notable development as she begins to push back against the strict hierarchy of Tactics. While she initially follows orders, she eventually starts to disobey commands that she finds morally repugnant, signaling a growing independence and a potential breaking point with the organization's methods. Her development is also seen in her strained relationship with her partner, Syakomon. The Digimon often tries to convince Hotaruko that she cannot hide her secret job from her family forever, highlighting the internal conflict between her duty to her family and her dangerous reality.

In terms of abilities, Hotaruko demonstrates excellent control over her electronic pulse, a skill that allows her to power up her partner Digimon in combat. Her team, Team Seven, is recognized for their proper e-Pulse control and their ability to bring out the full potential of their Digimon during training sessions. Her partner Syakomon is capable of digivolving, most notably to the Champion-level form Tylomon. In this form, Tylomon is a powerful aquatic combatant, easily able to overpower foes such as Burgermon and Burpmon, as well as battle other Digimon like Scorpiomon and NightChiropmon. Syakomon's known attack includes Water Screw, which drills an enemy with a twisting blast of water.
