Description
Kanaguri is a character who operates as both a celebrated movie director and a highly skilled assassin. He is a former member of the Order, an elite group of assassins within the Japanese Association of Assassins, and has also worked secretly as an ally of the enigmatic figure known as X or Slur. His public persona as a visionary filmmaker contrasts sharply with his deadly secret profession, a duality he maintains with ease.
Kanaguri’s entire existence is defined by an obsessive and passionate devotion to the art of filmmaking. His personality is highly eccentric and volatile, dictated entirely by what he perceives as a compelling narrative. He views the real world as a massive movie set and all people within it as actors in his production. His emotional state is directly tied to his work; he can fly into a manic rage if a shot is ruined or his equipment is damaged, and he becomes deeply depressed when footage is lost. Conversely, he is remarkably calm and focused when capturing a scene he finds exciting, even in life-threatening situations such as a plane crash or free-falling from thousands of feet. His attention span is short, and he gravitates towards whatever is most dramatic or exciting at any given moment, often escalating situations to improve the "scene". To him, life without filmmaking is not worth living.
His primary motivation is the pursuit of the perfect cinematic moment, superseding all morals, loyalties, or rules. He does not care which side wins in a conflict, only that the resulting chaos will make a great film. This belief led him to secretly ally with Slur to document the clash between the organization and the JAA. He sees himself not as a killer but as a first-rate filmmaker whose abilities are channeled entirely through his craft.
Within the story, Kanaguri first appears as a test administrator for the JCC entrance exams, using the opportunity to gather dramatic footage for his movies. During the exam, he kills the pilot and destroys the plane to create a more intense scene. He later infiltrates the JCC itself, disguising himself as a student. When a teacher interrupts his filming, Kanaguri publicly decapitates him and takes over the classroom, imposing his film-centric ideology. He fatally wounds the veteran instructor Satoda in a fight, though she manages to blind his right eye by throwing a dagger into his camera lens as her final act.
His most significant relationship develops with Akira Akao, whom he identifies as the ideal protagonist or "muse" for his ultimate movie. He manipulates her emotionally by revealing information about her past and makes a deal with her: he will help her get revenge if she agrees to be the lead in his film. Following the events at the JCC, he escapes with Akira, and later in Bangkok, he promises Sakamoto he will protect her as his "heroine". His relationship with the protagonist, Taro Sakamoto, is framed in cinematic terms; Kanaguri refers to Sakamoto as a "great supporting character" in his movie. Kanaguri originally joined the Order by killing a friend who was a member after a heated argument about movies, taking his place.
Throughout his appearance, Kanaguri experiences significant development. After his right eye is blinded by Satoda, he begins wearing an eyepatch. His betrayal and attack on the JCC lead to him being officially expelled from the Order and marked as "kill-on-sight" by the JAA, making him a fugitive. Despite these setbacks, he remains dedicated to his craft and his partnership with Akira, searching for the ending of his story.
Kanaguri possesses a unique set of abilities that blend filmmaking tools with lethal combat skills. He wields sharpened clapperboards that can decapitate multiple people in an instant. He carries a film camera whose destruction can demoralize him, but a replacement reignites his drive. His arsenal also includes a modified camera cannon capable of firing high-focused energy blasts powerful enough to punch a hole through an airplane, as well as a high-density laser disguised as a stage light. His physical capabilities are superhuman; his speed allows him to move faster than Shin's clairvoyance can predict and to dodge attacks from elite fighters like Sakamoto. His strength is enough to crack bullet-resistant glasses with a mere smartphone strike and withstand powerful blows that send him skidding across a room. Most notably, his determination to capture the perfect shot seems to physically enhance him, an example being when a highly skilled opponent was unable to move the arm holding his camera because it would have ruined his scene.
