Description
Heisuke Mashimo is a young freelance assassin and a supporting character. He is a tall young man with a lean build, standing at 180 centimeters tall, with spiky brown hair and black eyes. His most distinctive features are a bandage across the bridge of his nose and a crosshair symbol tattooed on his right cheek, both of which reflect his identity as a sniper. He typically wears a black jacket with a green line across the chest, green camouflage shorts, boots, and a backpack.

His backstory is defined by a profound sense of failure contrasted with a single, extraordinary gift. Throughout his early life, he was bad at almost everything he tried, from academics to sports. The only skill he discovered he possessed was sharpshooting. He attended an assassin academy where he honed this talent to an exceptional degree, but he remained incapable in nearly every other aspect of being a hitman, such as close-quarters combat and using knives. Despite these shortcomings, he graduated and was hired by an assassin agency. His new employer, however, saw his lack of versatility as a liability, and his colleagues quickly recognized his incompetence outside of sniping. Consequently, he was fired from the agency. This dismissal sent him into a difficult spiral, leaving him impoverished and living alone in his grandmother's old patchwork tent on top of a building, with only his pet bird, Piisuke, as a companion.

Personality-wise, Heisuke is characterized by a stark contrast between his professional lethality and his childish, emotional nature. He is simple-minded, optimistic, and friendly, but also extremely prone to tears, often crying when hungry, frustrated, or touched by an emotional moment. His low self-esteem, a direct result of his past failures, worsens this tendency. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is known for being airheaded and easily fooled, a trait so pronounced that his thoughts appear as crude, childlike drawings when read by a clairvoyant. He is extremely personable and values friendship highly, but also possesses a firm moral code, stating that he hates liars. Despite his friendliness, when he commits to an assassination target, he shows no mercy, demonstrating a clear separation between his personal and professional life.

Heisuke's primary motivation throughout his introduction is a desire for recognition and to prove his worth as an assassin after being cast aside by his former agency. He decides to target Taro Sakamoto, a legendary retired hitman with a massive bounty on his head, believing that successfully killing him will be the ultimate proof of his skill and will allow him to reclaim his dignity. His personal circumstances, specifically his dire poverty and the need to feed Piisuke, also serve as a powerful motivator.

His role in the story begins as an antagonist who seeks to claim Sakamoto's bounty. He initially confronts Sakamoto and Shin at the Sakamoto store but is easily deceived into leaving. He later enters an airsoft tournament for a monetary prize, where he reluctantly teams up with Sakamoto and Shin. During the tournament, he discovers Sakamoto's true identity and turns on his teammates, engaging in a serious sniper duel. Despite his incredible skill, he is ultimately defeated by Sakamoto. Impressed by his marksmanship, Sakamoto acknowledges him as an extraordinary sniper, and after the tournament, Heisuke becomes a regular visitor and ally to the Sakamoto store, often stopping by for leftover pork buns.

Heisuke's most significant and defining relationship is with his pet bird, Piisuke. Piisuke is not merely a pet but his trusted partner in combat. The bird assists him by providing aerial reconnaissance and helping him track targets, effectively acting as his eyes on the battlefield. Heisuke's devotion to Piisuke is immense; he spends 20,000 yen a month on the bird's food while limiting his own living expenses to a mere 2,000 yen. He also forms a key relationship with Taro Sakamoto, transitioning from a rival seeking his death to a loyal acquaintance whose skills are respected. He also develops a friendly rapport with Shin Asakura and Lu Shaotang, even as they often find his behavior comical and naive.

Heisuke undergoes notable character development from his introduction. Initially driven by a desperate and lonely need for self-validation, his defeat at Sakamoto's hands leads to unexpected acceptance. Instead of being killed or rejected, he receives genuine recognition from a legend, which begins to heal his low self-esteem. He shifts from a solitary, impoverished sniper living in a tent to an integrated part of the Sakamoto store's circle of friends, finding a sense of belonging he lacked after being fired. This development shows him learning that his worth is not solely defined by a successful kill but by the connections he makes and the respect he earns from those he values.

Heisuke's notable abilities center almost entirely on his supreme marksmanship. He is a sniper of unparalleled precision, possessing a natural talent honed to an incredible level. Sakamoto himself states that he has never fought such an extraordinary sniper. His skill is legendary; during his academy days, he set an unbeaten record by assembling a gun and firing it accurately 96 times, a feat that even surpassed the record of a young Sakamoto. This earned him the nickname Dragoon among students. He uses a custom-made bolt-action sniper rifle that he has refined for maximum accuracy and is capable of firing shots over extreme distances, such as 8.2 kilometers. His signature technique involves the use of ricochet rounds, special bullets that can bounce off surfaces multiple times, allowing him to hit targets from impossible angles and in complete cover. Aside from sniping, he displays low capability in other assassin skills, such as close combat and knife work.
