Description
Jōichirō Kaji is a character from the anime Sakamoto Days. He is a tall and slim teenager, standing at 182 cm, with sunken black eyes that are often shadowed by a navy blue ushanka with grey feathers, which he wears to reduce the burden on his ears. His typical attire includes a teal jacket with black buckles, aquamarine pants with pockets, and navy blue shoes. His birthday is December 6.
Kaji is an extremely shy person who frequently overthinks any actions he is about to take, which often leads him to remain silent and inactive. Despite this timid and reserved exterior, he possesses a determined and courageous interior, and is capable of effectively communicating and planning with companions when he overcomes his hesitation.
Kaji’s primary motivation stems from his role as a candidate aiming to join the JCC, the Japan Killer Committee. He is one of the three members of a special recommendation group for the JCC transfer exams. As a member of this elite group, he is recognized as one of the strongest applicants, and he works to prove his capability and pass the rigorous examination. Following the events of his exam, he later becomes involved in larger conflicts, motivated by a sense of duty to aid his peers and stop terrorist activities, such as locating hidden bombs and confronting a group known as X.
In the story, Kaji is first introduced during the JCC transfer exam, where he is paired with Shin Asakura and Mafuyu Seba. During this test, his keen hearing allows him to perceive subtle sounds that others cannot, giving his team a critical strategic advantage. He is able to deduce that their opponent Shinaya is being remotely controlled by detecting the sound generated from the controlling equipment. He also discerns a 0.5-second delay between the controller’s inputs and Shinaya’s movements. After receiving encouragement from Shin, he actively participates in the fight, even successfully landing a strike on the controlled Shinaya. However, he sustains a severe injury to his lower right abdomen from the powerful opponent and collapses, but ultimately passes the exam. He later reappears after a long absence, having been hospitalized. After recovering, he assists Sakamoto by using his hearing to locate a bomb, discovering it has been planted inside his former teammate Mafuyu. His key relationships are with his exam partners, Shin and Mafuyu, as well as Natsuki Seba, Mafuyu’s brother.
Kaji’s development is seen in his journey from an extremely timid and non-communicative individual to one who can take decisive action. Initially too shy to speak up about his discoveries, a word of encouragement from Shin gives him the courage to fight alongside his team. By the time of the Killer of the Century arc, he has recovered from his injuries and directly involves himself in dangerous situations, showing a greater willingness to act and communicate with his peers to resolve crises, such as conveying crucial information about a bomb.
Kaji’s most notable ability is his superhuman hearing, which is described as being able to understand any sound. He can accurately detect and distinguish fine sounds even in noisy environments. This allows him to perform feats such as hearing a person's heartbeat from a distance, detecting the faint sound of remote-control equipment, and even reproducing an opponent's movements just by listening to the sounds they make. By hearing echoes, he can also sense an opponent's location and range of motion. Beyond his auditory prowess, Kaji possesses enhanced physical capabilities. He has enough speed to dodge fast attacks and grab two people to retreat to safety, as well as enough strength to send opponents flying backward. His official fanbook parameters rate his physical ability, weapon application, martial arts, and marksmanship all at a 3 out of 5, with his potential rated higher at a 4, highlighting that his skills as a killer are covered by his superhuman hearing.
