TV-Series
Description
Daranimaru Goryo serves as a magical law enforcer and head of the Goryo Offices, a syndicate of magical law offices operating throughout Japan. He hails from a family with a thousand-year history of exorcising spirits, though their past methods emphasized wealth accumulation through bribery, extortion, and hostile takeovers. His ambition is to expand the Goryo Group into the world’s foremost organization combating evil spirits.
In appearance, Goryo is a young man with long dark hair, a mole beneath the left side of his mouth, and striking violet eyes. He stands 1.78 meters tall.
His personality is marked by arrogance, wealth, and a dismissive view of others. He treats magical law as a instrument for profit, demanding exorbitant fees for his services and threatening to unleash captured spirits on clients who decline to pay. Corrupt and heartless, he employs ruthless business tactics, even endangering clients to extort additional payments from their relatives. He is a picky eater, averse to oily foods, raw-smelling dishes, loud noises, and trains. He finds pleasure in walking through his family’s gardens, practicing calligraphy, and strategizing. His preferred foods include Yokan sweets, oshiruko mochi with azuki beans, soba noodles, and tea.
Beneath his cold exterior, Goryo holds deep regard for his longtime friend and assistant, Hanao Ebisu. Though his own magical abilities are comparatively weaker—a fact he admits—his effectiveness is amplified by his syndicate’s resources and cutthroat strategies. He wields various magical laws in his judgments, such as Magical Law § 1585 for attempted bodily harm or Magical Law § 1445 for illegal stay and attempted murder. He has also used a forbidden family technique called Ren Injection, transferring spiritual power to another at significant personal risk.
A pivotal moment arises when Tomas, a member of the organization Ark, forcibly transforms him, nearly turning him into a half-ghast. This defeat, which includes the destruction of his main office, coupled with Ebisu’s unwavering loyalty in saving him—after Goryo had previously fired him—triggers a profound shift. This experience sparks a heel realization and a genuine redemption arc. He sheds his condescending demeanor, embraces humility, and reveals a more compassionate nature, later performing a heroic rescue for others. After Ark destroys his syndicate, he undergoes sincere redemption.
His professional rivalry with Toru Muhyo is another key element. Goryo believes that while Muhyo is individually stronger, his own teamwork with Ebisu surpasses Muhyo’s partnership with Jiro Kusano. To expand his business and prove this superiority, he challenges Muhyo to a competition for his office, winning on a technicality that Muhyo declares renders the victory hollow. This empty triumph plays a part in his eventual reconsideration of his methods and ambitions.
