Description
Itechō Kangetsu serves as the Guard of Winter, the steadfast protector and companion to Rosei Kantsubaki, the Agent of Winter, in the anime Agents of the Four Seasons: Dance of Spring. His name carries thematic weight, as “Kangetsu” refers to the moon on a cold winter night, while “Itechō” translates to “frozen butterfly,” reflecting his wintry nature. A man of twenty-nine years, he possesses a tall, athletic build with striking silver-gray hair typically styled in an all-back manner and sharp gray eyes. A pair of sunglasses is his most defining accessory, and he has a noticeable habit of adjusting them when faced with awkward or absurd situations.

On the surface, Kangetsu appears cold, blunt, and as unyielding as the season he represents. However, this stern exterior conceals a deeply calm, gentlemanly personality who takes quiet and meticulous care of those around him. He is known for his kindness and consideration, leading some to remark that he is like a caring ghost who looks after others without seeking recognition. Despite his gentle nature, he possesses a ruthless and protective streak, showing no mercy to anyone who threatens his master, Rosei, or those he considers family.

Kangetsu is driven by a profound sense of duty intertwined with personal guilt. He has served the Kantsubaki household since childhood, and his loyalty to Rosei is absolute. Deeply affected by the disappearance of the previous Spring Agent, Hinagiku Kayo, ten years prior to the story, he blames himself for failing to protect both her and his young student, Sakura Himedaka, who was left behind. This regret fuels his determination in the present, as he seeks to atone for past failures by ensuring the safety of the current generation.

Within the narrative, Kangetsu functions as the anchor for the emotionally volatile Rosei. He provides crucial emotional support, chiding his master when he becomes self-deprecating while simultaneously swearing everlasting loyalty. As a member of the Winter faction, he moves with a coordinated squad of guards, all of whom trust his combat judgment implicitly. His relationship with Rosei is a deep bond built over a decade of service, treating him less like a master and more like a younger brother he must protect at all costs. He also holds a paternal or brotherly care for Sakura, whom he personally trained in swordsmanship; he deeply regrets the years of loneliness she endured while searching for Hinagiku. As the story progresses, Kangetsu experiences an evolution in his personal attachments, eventually realizing that his feelings for the grown Sakura have matured beyond simple mentorship into romantic love.

In terms of abilities, Kangetsu is a highly skilled swordsman, wielding a katana with precision and power. As the Guard of Winter, he is capable of combat on a level that inspires complete confidence in his allies, often handling conflicts alone so that other guards do not need to intervene. Beyond the battlefield, he is surprisingly domestic, listing cooking as a specialty, and he has a particular fondness for meat and green tea. Before the obligations of his duty took precedence, his childhood dream was to become a teacher, a sentiment that echoes in his patient teaching style with Sakura.
