Description
Akane Aoi is a first-year student at Kamome Academy and the best friend of Nene Yashiro. She is known for her vibrant indigo hair styled in two circular buns and is exceptionally popular among her peers, often called the "Queen of Popularity." Outwardly, she presents a gentle, cheerful, and selfless personality, but this facade masks profound loneliness and insecurity, as she fears that no one would accept her real self. She is skilled with words and can be harsh and dismissive toward her childhood friend, Aoi Akane, cheerfully rejecting his numerous love confessions—partly due to the humorous concern that marrying him would give her the name "Aoi Aoi." Her initial motivation comes from introducing Nene to the rumors about the school’s Seven Mysteries, inadvertently setting much of the plot in motion. Beneath her cheerful exterior, she harbors a deep wish to escape her relationships and the pressure of maintaining her false persona, a desire that leads her to assist the supernatural entity known as Number Six. She is captured by Number Six and taken to the Far Shore as a sacrificial offering, or kannagi, where her memories and personality are altered. As a kannagi, she gains the power to control insects, most notably a giant centipede. Her time in the supernatural realm also grants her the permanent ability to see supernaturals like Hanako. A pivotal moment occurs when Aoi Akane reveals that he has always known her true, cynical, and flawed personality and loves her regardless, bringing her to tears and beginning to break down her emotional walls. She later expresses deep regret for never reciprocating his feelings. Despite her rejections, she shows signs of jealousy and values his attention deeply. Her bond with Nene Yashiro is also strong, to the point that she is willing to sacrifice herself so that Nene may live. Academically exceptional, she ranks first in her grade through diligent study. She likes giraffes, enjoys desserts and games, dislikes crowds, and sometimes takes late-night walks.
