Description
Kōhei Kamogawa is a retired ice dancer and a former head coach of the Tonanmachi Lake Figure Skating Club, which closed after its home rink shut down. He subsequently joined the Lux Higashiyama Figure Skating Club as an assistant coach. As a competitor, Kamogawa specialized in ice dance rather than singles skating because a severe fall during his early childhood made him dislike jumps. He began skating in middle school, a relatively late start that later allows him to deeply empathize with skaters who begin training at an older age. His height is approximately 178 centimeters.

Kamogawa’s personality is reserved, pragmatic, and grounded. He dislikes gambling and impulsive behavior, preferring careful, structured approaches. He is not an emotionally expressive coach; instead, he relies on logic, consistency, and measurable progress. His coaching style emphasizes discipline, technical soundness, and realistic goal-setting rather than raw enthusiasm or flashy displays. This makes him a steady, stabilizing presence in the story, particularly as a counterbalance to the more passionate and instinctive coaching of Tsukasa Akeuraji.

His primary motivation is to help skaters develop their potential in a sustainable, honest way. He does not romanticize talent or promise easy success; instead, he focuses on practical steps and the importance of perseverance. This stems from his own experience as a late-starting skater who reached a national level in ice dance, and from having witnessed many skaters struggle with unrealistic expectations. He wants to protect young athletes from burnout and disappointment while still pushing them toward meaningful achievement.

Within the narrative, Kamogawa plays a supporting but increasingly vital role. He is first introduced as a colleague and former clubmate of Tsukasa Akeuraji. After the closure of his previous club, he joins Lux Higashiyama FSC, where he takes on personal lessons for adult beginners and also serves as a secondary coach for the main protagonist, Inori Yuitsuka. He works alongside Akeuraji to guide Inori’s development, offering technical insight and emotional steadiness. His presence helps ground the story’s more idealistic moments in the practical realities of competitive figure skating.

Kamogawa’s key relationships include his long-standing friendship with Tsukasa Akeuraji, whom he knew from their time training together in the same club. Their dynamic is built on mutual respect and shared history; Kamogawa often provides quiet, candid advice that Akeuraji trusts. He is also close with former skater Juna Shiratori, a childhood friend whom he once persuaded to learn ice dance as his practice partner. Later, he recognizes the talent of the young skater Ahiru Miku and brings in Shiratori to help coach her. His relationship with Inori Yuitsuka is professional and supportive: he understands her late start because of his own similar path, and he treats her with sincerity and patience, never coddling her but always giving her the tools to improve.

Character development for Kamogawa is subtle. He begins as a peripheral figure, a competent but somewhat resigned coach working at a small rink. As the story progresses, his responsibilities expand, and his guidance becomes essential to Inori’s growth. He also becomes more comfortable stepping into a leadership role, moving from the background to a position of greater influence at Lux Higashiyama. While he does not undergo a dramatic transformation, his gradual integration into the main coaching team reflects a deepening trust in his abilities and a quiet confidence that he can make a difference.

Notable abilities include his deep technical knowledge of ice dance and skating fundamentals, particularly in areas such as footwork, edge quality, and choreography. His aversion to jumping means he is not a specialist in high-element jumps, but his strength lies in the foundation and artistry of skating. As a coach, he excels at breaking down complex movements into manageable parts, assessing a skater’s weaknesses with precision, and creating long-term training plans that prioritize steady improvement over quick results. He is also skilled at managing the emotional volatility of young athletes by maintaining a calm, unshakable demeanor.
