Description
Hayate Yagami is a central figure in the events of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance, where she holds the position of governor of the special operations unit known as EXCEEDS. In this role, she oversees missions to investigate threats from an unknown invasive species that has pushed humanity to the brink of destruction, and she is also affiliated with the Saint Church, bearing the title of Knight of the Saint Church.
To understand Hayate in this series, it is essential to know her history. She first appeared as a young orphan living on Earth, paralyzed from the waist down and using a wheelchair. She was the unwitting master of the Book of Darkness, a powerful and corrupted magical tome. Initially a kind and cheerful girl despite her hardships, she formed a close, familial bond with the tome's guardian knights, the Wolkenritter. After a series of conflicts where the Book of Darkness consumed her and nearly caused catastrophic destruction, she was saved by her new friends, Nanoha Takamachi and Fate T. Harlaown. In the aftermath, she regained her ability to walk and took responsibility for the actions of the Book, leading her to join the Time-Space Administration Bureau.
Her personality is defined by a strong sense of kindness and responsibility. She treats everyone, including her former guardians the Wolkenritter, as cherished family. While she often presents a cheerful, playful, and occasionally mischievous exterior, she is known to hide her own pain and burdens from those close to her, driven by a powerful desire to atone for the destruction caused by the Book of Darkness. By the time of EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance, her voice actress has noted that Hayate possesses the most mature atmosphere she has ever had, though glimpses of her endearing personality still surface.
As the governor of EXCEEDS, her primary motivation is to lead her unit effectively against the invasive species threatening the world, continuing her lifelong mission to protect others and make amends for past events. Her role in the story places her as a commander and a strategic leader, coordinating operations and deploying her immense magical power when necessary.
Hayate shares deep, lasting bonds with Nanoha Takamachi and Fate T. Harlaown, who are not only her closest friends from childhood but also her most trusted comrades within the Bureau. The Wolkenritter—Signum, Vita, Shamal, and Zafira—remain her devoted guardians and family. She is also rarely seen without her Unison Device partner, Reinforce Zwei (Rein Yagami), who assists her in combat.
Throughout her development from a helpless victim of the Book of Darkness to a powerful officer in the Bureau, Hayate has shown immense personal growth. She has overcome a traumatic childhood and physical disability to become a confident and capable leader. Her sense of responsibility has only deepened over time, transforming her from a girl who needed protection into the protector of others.
In terms of abilities, Hayate is an exceptionally powerful mage, classified as SS-ranked in terms of her overall magical capacity. She is a master of wide-area bombardment magic, capable of devastating large zones with her spells. Her signature device is the long-ranged staff Schwertkreuz, and she utilizes the Tome of the Night Sky. She is known as a "glass cannon," possessing overwhelming offensive power but lacking in close-quarters combat and fine control, which is why she relies on Unison with Reinforce Zwei for fire control and precision. Her magical system is a rare combination of Ancient Belka and Mid-Childa styles, and she is sometimes referred to as a "Walking Lost Logia" due to her immense power.
