Description
Momo Ayase is the main female protagonist of the anime Dan Da Dan. She is a high school student who, after forming a friendship with an occult-obsessed classmate she nicknames Okarun, becomes embroiled in a world of both ghosts and aliens that forces her to awaken latent psychic powers. Raised by her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, a powerful spirit medium, Momo grew up in an environment steeped in the supernatural. Her parents are absent from her life.

Momo has a bold, confident, and fierce personality. She rarely feels intimidated by others and carries a no-nonsense attitude, often losing her temper when she feels slighted or when dealing with the chaos caused by her friends and allies. This can manifest in comedic bursts of violence. Underneath this tough exterior, however, she is deeply compassionate, fiercely loyal, and will not hesitate to put herself in harm's way to protect those she cares about. She is empathetic, capable of seeing the humanity in others, and quick to show remorse if she feels she has gone too far. Momo is also a strategic thinker and often takes on the role of planner during crises, making quick, decisive choices to ensure her group's safety.

Her primary motivation stems from a desire to protect her friends, particularly Okarun. After he is cursed by the Turbo Granny, she makes it her mission to help him recover what he lost, facing any supernatural creature that stands in their way. This mission expands as she forms deeper bonds with others who become entangled in the paranormal world. Her actions are driven by a strong sense of justice and a refusal to back down from a challenge, no matter how dangerous.

Momo serves as the core protagonist of the story. Initially a believer in ghosts but a skeptic of aliens, her worldview is shattered when her bet with Okarun proves both sides of the supernatural are real. She is a bridge between the everyday world and the chaotic realm of spirits and extraterrestrials. Her role involves leading the charge against various paranormal threats, using her intelligence and growing powers to protect her friends and navigate increasingly bizarre situations. She is also the emotional anchor of the group, balancing the chaos with her compassion and determination.

The central relationship in Momo's life is with Ken Takakura, whom she dubs Okarun. What begins as a rivalry built on opposing beliefs quickly forges an unbreakable friendship. She is extremely protective of him, having defended him from bullies early on, and she is deeply committed to helping him with his curse. Over time, this bond grows into romantic feelings, a development that is built gradually throughout the story. Another key relationship is with her grandmother, Seiko Ayase. Their connection was initially strained due to a childhood incident where a spiritual ritual Seiko taught her led to bullying. Momo resented Seiko and doubted her abilities, but she eventually realized her anger was more about others disrespecting her grandmother than the bullying itself. This realization mended their relationship, and Seiko became Momo's mentor, guiding her in the development of her psychic powers.

Throughout the story, Momo undergoes significant personal development. She begins as a skeptical and somewhat resentful teenager who has distanced herself from her grandmother's spiritual world. Her initial belief in ghosts was strong, but her skepticism of aliens was absolute. After her powers awaken and she is forced to confront both ghosts and aliens, she matures into a confident and capable hero. She learns to trust in her own strength, works effectively as part of a team, and deepens her emotional understanding of others. Her journey involves mastering her psychic abilities and facing increasingly difficult challenges that test her courage and resolve, transforming her from an ordinary high school girl into a key figure in the supernatural struggles that unfold.

Momo's abilities are psychic in nature, awakened when she was abducted by the alien Serpoians, who overstimulated her brainwaves and opened her chakras. Her primary ability is psychokinesis, which manifests as a pair of gigantic, invisible astral hands. With these, she can interact with the aura that surrounds all living beings and inanimate objects, allowing her to grab, lift, push, and pull things at a distance. She can lift very heavy objects, such as a fire truck, though the strength of this ability is tied to the strength of her physical hands. She also possesses the ability to perceive and manipulate spiritual energy or aura. She can see and sense the aura of people, creatures, and objects, and can actively suppress curses or transfer energy by manipulating these auras. For example, she can suppress the Turbo Granny's curse within Okarun's body. Additionally, when interacting with auras, she can accidentally access the memories of her targets, glimpsing their pasts. Momo also displays enhanced durability, allowing her to withstand powerful blows that would incapacitate a normal person. In moments of great stress, she can enter a heightened state of power, where her abilities are amplified, her aura becomes visible, and her hair floats, granting her immense temporary strength and the ability to levitate.
