Description
Manjiro is the priest of the Tsuchinoko Shrine in Byakuja Village and a pupil of the experienced spirit medium Seiko Ayase. He is a man of average height with short, messy black hair, round eyes with prominent lower eyelashes, and a noticeable unibrow. His personality is somewhat quirky; he has aspirations of becoming a YouTuber and tends to act in a casual, occasionally self-important manner. Despite this, he takes his role as a shrine priest seriously and possesses knowledge of the area’s supernatural history. He explains that the local hot spring and the village’s safety were maintained for two hundred years through the ancient practice of sacrificing children to a serpent deity, a ritual tied to the volcano’s activity. Manjiro’s primary motivation appears to be his duty as a protector of the shrine and, by extension, the people connected to it. He initially mistakes Momo Ayase for a simple tourist when she arrives in the hot spring town, only later realizing she is Seiko’s granddaughter and part of the group that must be safeguarded. His relationship with Seiko is that of a devoted student, though he operates independently at his own shrine. He also has a connection to Jin Enjoji, as the Tsuchinoko Shrine is located in the same area where Jiji lives. In the story, Manjiro reappears during a crisis involving a volcanic eruption and aids Momo and her allies by providing crucial context about the curse and the region’s folklore. His abilities are those of a spirit medium; he can sense and handle cursed objects, such as the pair of enchanted underwear that he is entrusted to protect after it is removed from Jiji. Later developments hint at potential betrayal, as the same cursed garment appears in the possession of an adversary, raising questions about Manjiro’s loyalties. He has not displayed combat powers beyond his spiritual knowledge and the ability to manage cursed artifacts, relying instead on his understanding of rituals and shrine traditions to support the main characters.
