Description
Hatz is a Regular from a humble background, with no connection to a famous family. His father was a potter, and Hatz has credited him for instilling a love of swordsmanship. Often perceived as having the image of an oriental warrior, he has black hair and black eyes, and a distinctive teardrop-shaped mark located under his left eye. His clothing style often blends traditional and modern elements, typically in shades of monotone and red. His reason for climbing the Tower is to seek honor and pride.
Personality wise, Hatz is serious, meticulous, and driven by a strict personal code of honor that he has followed since childhood. He is generally introverted and has difficulty making friends, but he is fiercely loyal to those he considers companions. He places a high value on repaying his debts and cannot tolerate betrayal, often becoming enraged when a friend is betrayed by another. Despite his quiet nature, he can be impulsive and hot-headed, particularly when his sense of honor is offended or when his teammates act in a way that endangers the group.
In the story, Hatz is a member of the same team as Shibisu and Anak Jahad. His primary motivation is to climb the Tower and prove his strength as a swordsman, while also honoring the memory of his friend Baam. After the second floor tests, he felt a strong sense of obligation to Baam and was among the first to speak of him positively following the revelation that Baam was an Irregular. When Baam was believed to be dead, Hatsu insisted that the group help Rachel climb the Tower in his memory. During the Workshop Battle, his immediate goal shifts to confronting and defeating Beniamino Cassano, an enemy who previously defeated him, and later to rescuing Baam from danger.
Hatz holds several key relationships within the story. He is a loyal friend to the Twenty-Fifth Baam, appreciating his honesty and strong desire to help others, and he defends Baam's interests even against his own teammates. His relationship with Khun Aguero Agnes is often contentious, with the two frequently bickering and mocking each other, though Hatz recognizes Khun's strategic brilliance and follows his plans when necessary. He remains a dedicated teammate to Shibisu and Anak Jahad, even though he and Anak often disagree and do not get along easily. He also shares a notable connection with Lero-Ro, his former Test Administrator, who later becomes an ally during the Workshop Battle.
His character shows notable development through the series. Initially a very skilled but somewhat rigid fighter, Hatz suffers a crushing defeat at the hands of Cassano, who broke one of his swords. After this loss, he trained relentlessly to improve, swinging his sword billions of times to grow stronger. This training pays off in their rematch, where Hatz is able to severely wound Cassano before his sword breaks again. This setback forces him to rely on his own strength rather than a weapon. He later acquires a powerful new ignition weapon called the East Sea, though its power is difficult for him to control. Throughout these trials, he begins to understand that a true swordsman is not defined by their weapon alone.
Hatz is a talented swordsman who primarily holds the position of a Scout, though his combat ability is considerable. He is recognized as being among the strongest Regulars from the test floor who do not come from the Great Families or the Zahard Princesses. He originally wielded two swords, a flying sword that moves and attacks on its own, and a close-combat sword capable of producing powerful shockwaves. After his second sword is broken, he later obtains a new weapon. His notable techniques include the Demonic Fish Wheel Dance, a deadly technique that concentrates shinsoo to enhance the sword's sharpness and force to cut down an enemy, a single annihilation thrust that concentrates sword energy at the tip of the blade, and the Seven Slashes Cloud Dragon Lake, which fires a series of rapid slashes at an opponent. During the Workshop Battle, when trapped without a sword, he demonstrates his ingenuity and willpower by using a metal pipe as a weapon, reinforcing it with shinsoo to fight a powerful patrol robot.
