Description
Fafnir is a supporting character in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, a powerful dragon from the Chaos Faction and an old acquaintance of Tohru. His true form is an imposing, dark-scaled dragon measuring approximately twenty meters in length, possessing multiple pairs of pure red eyes and a mouth filled with sharp teeth. When living among humans, he takes on the appearance of a handsome young man with long black hair tied in a loose ponytail, sharp red eyes behind a pair of glasses, and typically dressed in a butler-style suit. Tohru gives him the human alias Takeshi Ooyama.

Fafnir's background is one of isolation and mistrust. In his original world, he lived as a recluse, spending centuries guarding a hoard of treasure deep within a desolate mountain cave. His intense hatred for humanity stems from countless experiences of greedy humans attempting to steal his precious hoard. This animosity leads him to view humans with extreme suspicion, and his default response to nearly any question or problem is a curt suggestion to kill. Despite this fearsome exterior, Fafnir is not without depth. He is a dragon of few words who possesses sharp insight and a surprisingly thoughtful nature. He follows a personal philosophy that a true dragon must live entirely by their own will, a principle he once advised Tohru to follow even if it meant defying her own family.

Initially, Fafnir travels to the human world out of concern for Tohru, skeptical of her decision to live with the human Kobayashi. He has no intention of staying, finding the human realm irritating and beneath him. However, his plans change when he attends a party at Kobayashi's apartment and is introduced to video games by Kobayashi's coworker, Makoto Takiya. Recognizing a kindred spirit in collecting digital treasures and mastering game systems, Fafnir decides to remain in the human world and becomes Takiya's roommate. This relationship is the catalyst for his entire character development. Living with Takiya, who accepts him without fear or judgment, Fafnir begins to reluctantly acknowledge that not all humans are worthless. He comes to view Takiya as a hit, a person worth knowing, and allows Takiya to give him the affectionate nickname Faf-kun. Their bond is one of quiet camaraderie, often spending countless hours gaming through the night or collaborating on doujinshi for Comiket, even if Fafnirs own books of genuine, working curses never sell.

Over time, his murderous hatred for humanity softens into a general indifference and a pragmatic willingness to distinguish between those he can tolerate and those he cannot. He develops a gruff, tsundere-like personality, never openly expressing affection but showing he cares through actions, such as bringing in the laundry before it rains or handing Takiya a towel after he is caught in a downpour. While he still makes morbid pronouncements, he integrates into the routine of human life, developing mundane preferences such as enjoying mild curry and disliking spicy food.

Fafnirs notable abilities are formidable, marking him as one of the strongest dragons in the series. Tohru herself admits she has never won a one-on-one fight against him, and he is capable of effortlessly blocking her breath attacks with his palm. He is a master of curses and black magic, able to create potent curses so powerful that even a human reciting his written incantations can invoke them. His physical strength is immense, capable of sending Tohru flying back with a single throw of a ball. Like other dragons, he can fly, breathe fire, and requires no sleep, allowing him to stay awake for thousands of years to guard his treasure or to achieve all-nighters for gaming sessions. His combat prowess is so respected that he is called upon to act as a mediator and restrainer when other powerful dragons, like Tohru and Elma, come into conflict.
