Description
Elma is a female dragon from the opposing faction of Harmony, which stands in direct contrast to the Chaos faction that her longtime acquaintance, Tohru, belongs to. She arrives in the human world with the intention of capturing Tohru and bringing her back to their realm, but she soon finds herself stranded and unable to return on her own. To live in human society, she adopts the alias Elma Joui and begins working as an office lady at the same systems engineering company as Kobayashi, the human woman with whom Tohru lives.

In her human form, Elma appears as a tall and striking woman with dark, short black hair with purple tips and blue eyes. Her work attire consists of a grey blazer, white shirt, light blue tie, knee-length skirt, and heels. She can also be seen in traditional garb that includes a dark blue leotard and a purple kimono. While in human form, she typically hides her most prominent draconic feature, a single horn. Her true dragon form is a massive blue sea serpent approximately one hundred twenty meters long, equipped with a brown forehead horn and a trident-like tail, an appearance that is well-suited for aquatic environments.

Personality-wise, Elma is characterized by her unwavering dedication to her duties and a strong sense of justice, though she is also noted for being somewhat arrogant and stubborn. One of her most defining traits is her extreme enthusiasm for food, particularly sweets, which often leads her to be easily manipulated or persuaded by those who offer her tasty treats. This gluttony is so pronounced that she spends nearly all of her income from working on food, and she has been known to compromise her own principles when tempted by cuisine. Despite her intelligence and ability to memorize vast amounts of information, such as legal codes, she frequently struggles with understanding human social norms and makes minor faux pas among people. She is also known for her chronic indecisiveness when faced with trivial choices, such as deciding what to eat or buy at a store.

Elma’s primary motivation in the story stems from her complex history with Tohru. The two were close friends in their own world, and they even traveled together for a time while attempting to understand humanity. However, a conflict arose when Tohru disappeared without a word, leading Elma to feel abandoned and offended, especially after discovering that Tohru now openly lived with a human despite previously disdain human contact. Her pursuit of Tohru is therefore not only a matter of factional duty but also a deeply personal attempt to reconcile with a former friend she missed and feared had been killed. When the two finally confront each other in the human world, their fight is intense, but Elma ultimately breaks down and admits how much she missed Tohru, which leads to the beginning of their reconciliation.

Within the story's setting, Elma works alongside Kobayashi and another human colleague, Makoto Takiya, and she quickly adapts to the professional environment due to her serious and dedicated nature. Despite her rivalry with Tohru, she gradually develops a cordial relationship with Kobayashi as well, and she participates in various community events and outings with the other dragons, including Kanna Kamui and Lucoa. In her daily life, she is unique among the main dragon characters as the only one who lives alone in her own rented apartment. Her adjustment to human society is further explored in a spin-off series that focuses specifically on her experiences and challenges as an office lady.

Throughout the narrative, Elma shows considerable development as she balances her original draconic duties with her growing life among humans. Her professional growth is evident as she completes her tasks at work, even leading a strike for better food options in the company cafeteria, though her financial situation remains perpetually strained by her impulsive eating habits. She also reveals a more protective and caring side on occasion, such as when she transforms to fight a bear to protect children during a camping trip. In manga-exclusive developments, deeper layers of her feelings for Tohru are explored, including a confession of romantic interest.

In terms of abilities, Elma is considered to be a dragon of immense power, rivaling that of Tohru. While Tohru is described as an all-rounder capable of versatile magic, Elma is classified as a power-type who excels in raw physical strength. She is known to be proficient in creating effective magical charms and can use abilities such as clairvoyance. However, she has a notable limitation due to a magical lineage issue: unlike many other dragons, she cannot open a dimensional gate to return to her own world on her own. Her combat skills are substantial, and she has centuries of experience, often fighting Tohru to a standstill. Nevertheless, her candid and naive nature frequently undermines her formidable strength, making her susceptible to being tricked or outmaneuvered by others.
