Description
Holo is an ancient wolf deity, sometimes referred to as the Wisewolf of Yoitsu, whose existence spans several centuries. Her story begins in the northern land of Yoitsu, from which she journeyed south long ago, eventually arriving at the farming village of Pasloe. There, she was revered as a harvest goddess, using her power to ensure bountiful crops for the villagers for generation after generation. As time passed and the villagers adopted new agricultural methods and religious beliefs, her role became neglected, and she felt she was no longer needed. Having kept her promise to the village for centuries, she chose to leave, seizing an opportunity to hide in the wheat aboard the cart of a passing merchant, Kraft Lawrence, thereby beginning her journey back to her distant homeland in the north.

In her primary form, Holo appears as a young girl around fifteen years of age, possessing long, flaxen-colored hair and distinctive red eyes. Her wolf heritage is revealed by a pair of wolf ears atop her head and a long, thick wolf tail at the base of her spine, both the color of wheat. To avoid persecution from the Church, which views pagan spirits with suspicion, she often conceals these features under a hood, a hat, or with long skirts and cloaks. Her true form, however, is that of a giant wolf, slightly larger than an elephant, with fur that is wheat brown on the upper half of her body and off-white elsewhere. This transformation requires her to consume either wheat or fresh blood.

Holo possesses a complex and layered personality. She is highly intelligent, witty, and self-assured, often displaying a crafty and sometimes coquettish demeanor, especially in her interactions with Lawrence. Her speech is characteristically eloquent and often archaic, as she seldom uses contractions. Despite her wisdom, she is not without her flaws; she can be prideful, jealous, and prone to the occasional childish caprice, including an endearing habit of snoring, which she vehemently denies. She is also notably gluttonous, possessing a great fondness for hearty food, sweets, and a particular passion for apples and cider. Underneath her confident exterior, however, lies a deep-seated fear of loneliness, a consequence of her long life and the transience of the humans around her.

Her central motivation, and the primary driver of her journey with Lawrence, is to return to her homeland of Yoitsu. Having been away for so long, she yearns to see it once more and to see how the world has changed during her centuries of seclusion in Pasloe. Her role in the narrative is that of a deuteragonist, whose pact with the merchant Kraft Lawrence sets the entire story in motion. While Lawrence provides the practical knowledge of trade and commerce, Holo contributes her ancient wisdom and sharp instincts, helping him navigate complex business deals and avoid pitfalls. Yet her true nature also brings its own dangers, as it attracts unwanted attention from the Church authorities.

The most significant relationship in Holo’s life is with Kraft Lawrence. What begins as a simple contract between a merchant and a deity evolves into a deep and complex bond of mutual affection, trust, and love. Their dynamic is a central pillar of the story, characterized by witty banter and intellectual sparring, with Holo often teasing Lawrence to test his wits and determination. A poignant theme in their relationship is the disparity between their lifespans; Holo is painfully aware that a human life is like a blink of an eye to her, a fear she often hides behind jokes and a confident facade. Other key relationships include the bond she forms with the young apprentice Col, showing a gentler, more maternal side of her nature, and later the role of wife and mother, as she and Lawrence eventually settle down, open a bathhouse in the town of Nyohhira, and have a daughter named Myuri.

Over the course of her journey, Holo undergoes significant personal development. Initially driven by a sense of duty and a wistful desire to go home, she gradually opens her heart to the possibility of a future intertwined with a human. Her growing affection for Lawrence causes her to confront her fear of loneliness and the pain of eventual separation. She learns to rely on another person and to accept his help, even as she fiercely desires to protect him, going so far as to reveal her true wolf form to save him from danger. Her love for Lawrence ultimately leads her to choose a life with him, forgoing her centuries-long identity as a detached deity to embrace the joys and sorrows of a shared human existence.

As an ancient wolf spirit, Holo possesses a range of notable supernatural abilities. Her primary power is her longevity and an intimate connection to wheat; it is said she cannot die as long as the wheat she carries in a pouch remains intact, as this wheat represents her physical anchor to the world. She can transform between her human and colossal wolf forms at will, provided she consumes wheat or fresh blood for the change. In her wolf form, she possesses immense strength, capable of taking on large groups of armed men, and tremendous speed, far exceeding that of a horse. Her senses, even in human form, are extraordinarily sharp; her hearing allows her to eavesdrop on whispers from other rooms and even detect lies by the subtle sounds in a person's voice. Furthermore, she retains her godly ability to influence the growth of crops, which she once used to bring both prosperity and rest to the fields of Pasloe.
