Description
Edward Serfence is a faculty member at Regarden Magic Academy, where he serves as a teacher specializing in dark magic and the history of magical sources. He is 26 years old and stands 177 centimeters tall, belonging to the Rizance race. His past is marked by a significant achievement and an equally profound disappointment: he once climbed the great Tower and came within reach of becoming one of the supreme mages known as the Magia Vander, or the Supreme Five Wands, but he failed at the final stage of the selection process. Following this defeat, he abandoned his dream of reaching the top and left the Tower, subsequently becoming an instructor at the academy. His bitter experiences have led him to refer to the Tower with the grim epithet of the graveyard of wands.
In terms of personality, Edward presents himself as a strict and acerbic individual, known for his harsh tongue and seemingly cruel attitude, particularly towards students he deems unworthy or lacking in pure motivation. He espouses a philosophy of magic absolutism, believing that only those with genuine talent and a pure devotion to magic itself deserve to stand at the top. He has little patience for those who struggle with magic or who pursue it for reasons he considers shallow. This is most evident in his treatment of the protagonist, Will Serfort, a student who cannot use magic and whom Edward constantly challenges and ridicules. He once furiously denounced what he saw as a foolish and shallow romantic desire as an unworthy reason to aim for the pinnacle of magic.
Despite this harsh exterior, Edward's behavior is fundamentally driven by a desire to protect his students from repeating his own mistakes. He is willing to be hated and to play the role of a villain if it means pushing a student onto a more realistic or safer path, thereby saving them from the kind of crushing disappointment and despair he himself experienced after his failure at the Tower. His cruelty is a form of tough love, born from a place of low self-esteem where he does not acknowledge his own talent and consequently imposes extreme standards on others. He does not mind being disliked if his methods ultimately help his students succeed and avoid the heartbreak he once felt.
Edward's role in the story is primarily that of an antagonist and a harsh mentor. He is one of the primary authority figures who doubts Will's potential and actively tries to make him abandon his quest. In a significant early trial, he administers a special test where Will must land a single blow on him to earn credits and avoid expulsion. During this duel, Edward unleashes his full power, demonstrating the vast gap between them, but also inadvertently giving Will the chance to prove his resolve. Edward holds key relationships with other faculty members, including a rivalry or, at minimum, a strong disagreement with the more温和な Workner Norgram over teaching methods. He was also part of the same cohort as Kureiruwi Sera, though he famously detests her terrible cooking.
Edward experiences subtle but significant development over the course of the narrative. While he begins as a seemingly one-dimensional, harsh critic, his backstory and genuine concern for his students are gradually revealed. His respect is something that must be earned through sheer determination and action. In a notable moment of development, upon Will's graduation and his final departure to challenge the Tower, Edward sets aside his bitter demeanor. Using his own magic, he performs a spell of the sword to see Will off on his journey, offering a silent, symbolic blessing and acknowledging the younger man's unwavering spirit.
In terms of abilities, Edward is a master of dark magic, capable of wielding the most advanced spells in that school. He is not merely a user of high-level incantations but is also highly skilled at modifying and enhancing even simple, low-level spells, transforming them into devastating attacks. His primary magical tool is the Wand of the Dark Serpent. His practical experience and power are demonstrated by the fact that he has successfully ventured to the 33rd floor of the dungeon, a feat that underscores his status as a一流魔导师. His combat style is冷静,残酷, and highly efficient, reflecting his years of experience both as a dungeon adventurer and as a participant in a large-scale war when he was still a student. His personal tastes include a love for extremely strong black coffee and a noted dislike for the lethal cooking of his colleague, Kureiruwi Sera.
