Description
Denken is an elderly mage who appears during the first-class mage examination arc. He is a veteran court magician and a former career soldier, having clawed his way up from commoner origins to become a powerful political figure capable of influencing his country. At the time of his introduction, which takes place twenty-nine years after the death of the hero Himmel, Denken is seventy-eight years old. He is known as an Imperial Mage, a title that speaks to his experience in the brutal power struggles of the capital, and he later successfully achieves the rank of first-class mage.

Denken was born in the Weise region. In his youth, he lost both of his parents to demon attacks and was subsequently raised by Glück, the feudal lord of Weise. As a child, he studied magic under Macht, a powerful demon known as the Sage of Destruction who served the Glück family. Denken hated Macht for being a demon, but the demon ironically became his mentor, training him to be strong enough to one day potentially defeat him. This upbringing instilled in him a pragmatic and survival-focused mindset. As a young man, he married his childhood friend and distant relative, Lectüre, but she died in her mid-twenties due to her frail health. They had no children, as Denken chose not to put further strain on her body.

Personality-wise, Denken embodies the meaning of his German name, which translates to to think. He is a calm, analytical, and deeply strategic individual, often described as an old fox who is patient and skilled at reading both people and situations. Having watched many stronger individuals fall from power, he believes that a mage needs neither pride nor strength in the conventional sense, valuing survival and practicality over flashy displays of power. Despite this ruthless political background, he is surprisingly personable and humane. He prefers to resolve problems with minimal force, insisting on subduing opponents rather than killing them, and he shows genuine care for his comrades, treating the young mage Laufen like a surrogate granddaughter. His philosophy towards magic itself mirrors that of the elf mage Frieren, as he believes that the joy of magic lies in the pursuit of it, not in the prestige of titles or obtaining powerful spells.

Denkens primary motivation throughout the story is deeply personal. He does not seek the title of first-class mage for power or status. His reason for taking the difficult and dangerous exam is to gain permission to enter his hometown, the Northern Plateau, which has been sealed off by a great barrier. His village was swallowed by Machts magic, the Golden Land, and Denkens ultimate goal is to return there to visit his wifes grave and confront his past. This longing to reconnect with his late wife and his lost home drives him to overcome challenges that many younger mages would shy away from.

In the story, Denken plays a significant role during the first-class mage examination. He is assigned to a party with the young mages Richter and Laufen, where he acts as the strategist and voice of reason. During the first test, he quickly sees through Frierens disguise and, despite knowing he is outmatched, boldly challenges her in combat to buy time for his team. During the second test in the Tomb of the Ruined King, he proves his leadership by formulating a plan that assigns team members to fight replicas of enemies they are best suited to counter, maximizing their chances of survival. His most critical relationships are with his old master Macht, whom he eventually must confront, and with his guardian Glück. He also shares a long-standing friendship with Lernen, another ancient first-class mage. After the exam, he remains grateful to Frieren for her role in helping to defeat Macht and restore his hometown.

Denkens development shows a man who spent his life pursuing power and influence to save his wife, only to lose her and then spend decades without a clear purpose. His journey in the series sees him rekindle his passion, which the great mage Serie notes as a youthful flame still burning in his eyes. He moves from being a politically cunning figure to a more reflective individual who actively seeks human connections, treating his exam teammates as the family he never had and confronting the demon of his past to finally find closure.

As a combatant, Denken is a highly formidable mage whose skill is comparable to a first-class mage even before he officially earns the title. He is proficient in standard offensive and defensive magic but also commands powerful high-level spells. His signature techniques include Judgment Light, a spell that unleashes countless light arrows at near-light speed, and a combination of wind and fire magic called Valdgoze and Daosdorg to create a massive firestorm. Uniquely for a mage, he is also willing to engage in physical combat if his mana runs out, using brawling as a deliberate tactic to buy time or create an opening. After becoming a first-class mage, he is granted a rare curse-reversal spell from Serie, Mystilzla, which reflects curses back at the caster but requires a colossal amount of mana to use.
