Description
Kyotaro Ichikawa is the protagonist of the story. He is a 14-year-old second-year middle school student born on March 26. Physically, he is characterized by his shorter-than-average stature, standing at about 156.5 centimeters, and his brown hair, which is styled into a long fringe that often covers one of his eyes. This appearance contributes to his initial presentation as a gloomy, awkward, and unassuming presence within his class.

His personality is defined by a sharp contrast between his public exterior and his rich inner world. Kyotaro is a self-described chuunibyou, meaning he harbors grandiose, dark fantasies and often imagines himself as a brooding, misunderstood figure. At the start of the story, his thoughts are filled with macabre scenes, including fantasies about harming his popular classmates, particularly Anna Yamada. However, these violent daydreams are understood to be an outlet for his jealousy, insecurity, and alienation, not genuine malice. Beneath this edgy facade, he possesses a keen sense of observation and a deeply empathetic nature. He is sensitive to social cues and the unspoken feelings of others, often noticing details that more outgoing characters miss. Despite his low self-esteem and tendency to view himself as being at the bottom of the school's social hierarchy, he demonstrates a strong aversion to bullying and a consistent, if awkward, desire to help those in trouble.

Kyotaro's primary motivation evolves over the course of the narrative. Initially, he is driven by a desire to maintain his isolated, self-constructed world, seeking solace in reading and his own imagination. His role in the story is that of the central protagonist and primary point of view, with much of the narrative conveyed through his internal monologues. The key turning point comes with his growing fascination with Anna Yamada, a popular and cheerful classmate who also works as a model. She begins to use his secret hideaway, the school library, and their forced proximity leads him to see past her perfect public image to her quirks, vulnerability, and essential kindness. His motivation shifts from one of edgy resentment to a bumbling, heartfelt effort to understand and connect with her. He becomes driven by the desire to protect the emerging bond between them, even as his deep-seated insecurity convinces him he is unworthy of her attention.

His key relationships are central to his development. The most significant is his relationship with Anna Yamada. Their dynamic begins with mutual curiosity and misunderstanding, progressing through tentative friendship as Kyotaro witnesses her genuine nature. His internal conflict about his feelings for her is often personified through a dialogue with "Imaginary Kyotaro," a cooler, more confident version of himself who represents his ideal self. At home, he has a warm relationship with his older sister, Kana, and his mother, who affectionately calls him Kyo-chan. His sister often acts as an unwitting romantic wingman as she notices his changing behavior. He also has a small circle of classmates, including Chikara Ota and Kenta Kanzaki, who gradually become friends as he starts to emerge from his shell.

Throughout the story, Kyotaro undergoes significant character development. He starts as a lonely boy who romanticizes his status as an outcast, using violent fantasies as a shield. By confessing his love and navigating the trials of a first relationship, he slowly dismantles his own cynical defenses. He learns to accept his own vulnerability and recognize his self-worth. For the theatrical release, the story continues from the second season of the television anime. The movie includes new footage that directly follows this development, depicting the period after Kyotaro confesses his love to Yamada and showing how their relationship continues to grow and change him.

While not possessing any superhuman powers, Kyotaro has several notable abilities. He is academically talented, recognized as one of the smarter students in his grade. He has a talent for drawing and artistic design, which he uses to help with class projects. His most practical skill is his high level of observational prowess, allowing him to analyze situations and the emotions of others with great accuracy. He also jokingly claims to have a "high-speed movement technique," a sudden burst of speed he uses to escape embarrassing situations, which serves as a running gag throughout the series.
